I agree, the three foot bumper also looks weird.

I also agree. It's kind of strange that many car guys who are critical of the extended 5mph bumpers of the mid-seventies will admire these add-on continental kits. That looks like about a 40mph bumper!

It's a very impressive car, though. Someone made a sincere effort to make or keep it nice.

Definitely "of the period". But hey, who doesn't like sitting on hard plastic? Reminds me of living rooms full of furniture you weren't allowed to sit on.

Do you know of a source for these? The seats in my original '61 Mercury have these on them (from the dealer when new), and seats are in great shape as a result, but the clear vinyl is cracking a little every time I sit down. The only solution seems to be to not drive the car. 😬

The “Continental “ spare tire typically rotated and pivoted off to the left for easier trunk access, but getting it off for use takes a bit more effort, and keeping a backup spare more accessible in the trunk makes life easier (ask me how I know)

I wonder if the bumper is different due to the kit or just disassemble and remount the existing bumper? Plus side is you dont need to pack the cheap collapsible picknik table for shows. Priced about right if the door panels didnt need repaired and the engine bay were detailed. Knock off 5K?

IMO there is some sentimental attachment to this car, or beer goggles. If you start a 45K and then drop to 32, makes you wonder. Very nice looking car, but if I were selling it I would throw in an original bumper with it.

The seller indicates it was his father's car, and the seller doesn't know much about it (and old cars in general?).

Dad probably told him it was worth $45K and/or it was insured for that amount, but now seller just wants it gone.

I'm guessing the lucky buyer will get it for a discount of the $29K and the continental kit will go away.

Pay $20K, pull the seat covers and get rid of that rear porch, then be happy with a nice car at a fair price.

I agree that both items hurt the overall appearance of the car, but the continental kit looks like it could be removed and still use the existing rear bumper. The seat cover removal should not be that difficult. IMO a '58 Olds coupe with all of the chrome in nice condition is worth more than 20, but 25 might be the top end.
