You don’t see many steering wheels that configuration, or maybe I just never noticed.

Dale,

Chrysler did this in the late 50's a nd early 60's, the rectangular steering wheel.  They also placed in some cars - the rear view mirror on the dash.  Push button transmissions control, and in some cars the drivers seat was higher than the passenger seat.  Oddball stuff like that adds a bit of charm now.

I am sorry, I tried real hard to like the 61-63's but Exner seemed like he was on drugs during this time, too excess.  If you look at the 59's and 60's, you see art.  Maybe not to everyone's tastes, but art.  The complex grille of the 1960's is one of my all time favorites and was super expensive to create.

I recently looked at a 59 Custom 2 door hardtop on the "Imperial On Line Club" website for sale in Minnesota and then researched the 59's.  They are in my opinion - superior to the Cadillac and Buicks in 1959 for overall style and execution yet are basically an afterthought compared to the 59 Cadillac especially.

But not so - again in my opinion - for 61-63.  I once considered a coupe purchase of a 63, which by that time Exner's goose was cooked and 1963 Imperials are the least offensive of this era.  Ultimately it would be a purchase of an artifact not a lust magnet.  Just a fun way to transport you back to 1963, or in this case 1961.  But I'm not dropping $11 large on one.

I agree, Jake, that Exner's designs got increasingly

bizarre, and some of his never-made ideas were

astoundingly ugly.  I like the 1960 Imperials as you do.

However, I think the 1961 Imperials look quite sleek

in their 2-door hardtop and convertible forms.

Here is the convertible:
