1955 Hydramatic

I'm trying to salvage a '55 hydramatic that was rebuilt and never worked properly. Unfortunately I have none of the old parts so have a couple of questions for The Olds experts

1. The clearance in the rear clutch is excessive. it is an 8 plate clutch. Steels are .070, fibres are .1 inches. There is more than 1/8 inch of clearance in the clutch pack.  Wrong plates or wrong piston? Plates are new.

2. The book shows brass expanders under the clutch seals. They are not there.  Boo Boo or were they deleted?
