1959 Edsel Villager Station Wagon

• transmission: automatic
• cylinders: 8 cylinders
• title status: clean

RARE Villager station wagon. V8 auto. only 5687 produced. Just testing the water on this before I pack it away for the winter. I have owned the wagon for a few years now and have kept it roadworthy. Great running and driving car. Fresh tune up, oil change and electrical work- including new ‘moon eyes’ gauges and rebuilt MSD box.
Perfect patina. The car is 99% complete as far as chrome, trim and badges etc. Car gets noticed everywhere I go. The exhaust sounds mean and is truly a joy to drive. NOS fender skirts and a set of 4 original wheel covers and a repair manual. With seatbelts for 6 passengers, load up the family and cruise.
The bad- not a winter car. There is no weatherstripping on the doors or back gate, so it does get wet in the rain(garaged all winter). No door panels (I have the cargo area panels-but they’re rough). No headliner (have the bows). Torn section of drivers seat(see pic). Still some funky electrical bugs. There is some rust through in the passenger rocker and some additional bubbling in other areas, but other than that pretty much surface rust only. Floors solid. Cracked windshield and passenger rear(no leak). The power steering is starting to leak and some drips visible on the ground from engine compartment and rear end.  
If car does not sell, I will address these issues through the winter and most likely decide to keep it. Open to trades for something pre 1975 with a more economical MPG.

So basically, reading the list of negatives, he does not want to do anything to it that costs money.  He wants you to buy it and take it away.  It needs restored but the work would place it upside down in a hurry and I am sure Edsel stuff is hard to locate.

Not really. Kinda like Model As, once you get in among Edsel people, you can typically find what you need in their parts pile. 

 

1959 Ranger sedans and 1959 Villager wagons are the most common Edsel.

They are durable and easy to fix.

100% Ford mechanicals (and most all body parts too) that are available everywhere. 

 

On this car, all the "rare" Edsel stuff is there. (although rare isnt the correct word) Lots of door panels have been removed over the years, and are hanging out in people's parts piles. The buckskin interior on this one is the most common color so matching would even be easy. 

 

The big problem? Except for a few examples (basically convertibles) Edsels have no value. If you buy one that has been sitting and just needs deep cleaning and all the routine maintenance done you will quickly be upside down. If you need to do paint, upholstery or chrome you will find that have adopted a long term garage resident. 

 

Lots of people talk about them and man do they get attention(!)

But nobody who 'wants' an Edsel, will actually cough up the dollars to buy one.  They are just very low value (low interest) vehicles. 

Of course a good car for a beginner, except they wont be able to sell it later and get something else. . . . . 

 

This one?? To get it out of the driveway, the price would probably need to be around $1000 or less.
