'65 Mustang for sale with a build date of 14S....

Recommended Posts

If 14 is the day of the month then what month is the letter "S"? January is usually "A" and December is usually "M" since most car companies don't use the letter "I" for September since it gets confused for the number one. Could it have something to do with the '65 Mustang first going on sale in April of 1964 so they used a different system because they made 1965 models for over a year?

  • Lebowski changed the title to '65 Mustang for sale with a build date of 14S....

You're exactly right, Lebowski.  Since the model year was extended, they needed more letters.  My April 1965 built car has "R" on the VIN tag, so this car was apparently scheduled for May 14, 1965.

There is a table in the Ford Parts Catalog book that decodes it. The first year of manufacture starts with A for January, B for February and so forth. The second year of manufacture starts with N for January. The letters I and O are deleted. Besides the first year Mustang, the 1957 Thunderbird had a 15 month production run and therefore they got into using second year numbers. I'm sure there are other examples.
