36 Dodge diff oil and wheel bearing grease

Recommended Posts

I'm to the point of oil in the diff and putting on all 4 drums.  I'm considering Royal Purple 85-140 syn in the diff.  I'm not sure of what grease to use on the wheel bearings.  What's good, whats not. How much of the area between the inner and outer bearings on the front wheels should be filled with grease? 1/2, 3/4 or all full?

How will I know when the rear axle bearing have enough grease? Thanks in advance  Bob.

On your diff is the pinion seal/sleeve leather or rubber?

I have no Idea.  I haven't taken any of the diff apart.  I assume that it may be original as the truck has been in my family since early 1950's.  I don't recall my dad ever doing anything to the diff.  It has been sitting  not run since mid 60's.

Any good quality wheel bearing grease will be fine. I like Redline CV-2, it is synthetic and very low friction. You probably shouldn't pack the hubs, but do coat the inside of the hub and the bearing cap with grease so they can't rust.

There are many opinions here, but from my experience, leather seals do not work well with synthetic.

I guess I might have to bite the bullet and check/replace the pinion seal since it has been sitting so long.  Thanks... Bob
