rbk
I have a customer who is looking to add AC to his 1939 Commander. The car has the original engine etc. Did anyone do this? Vintage Air does not have a setup for this car. He is located in Chicago. Any suggestions welcome Robert Kapteyn.
starlightcoupe
Bob, You know you're going to get more feedback and recommendations on the SDC Forum. There were 6-volt A/C systems, but never factory installed in Studebakers. And Mr Burnette has or had a '51 Land Cruiser that Doc Cade had converted the 12-volt compressor to run on 6-volts. I found this setup https://www.classicautoair.com/shop/trunk-mounted-air-conditioning-system/ but like to see other options.
rbk
Studebaker offered a 6 volt trunk mounted air conditioner for retrofit in 1953 Studebakers. These were made by NOVI and were used in Packards and Buicks since 1952. They were first used on 1955 Studebakers and offered for earlier cars as retrofits. I also found this https://www.classicautoair.com/shop/trunk-mounted-air-conditioning-system/ they fit back to 1940 so they must have a 6volt unit. Stude Light
Hi Bob, The Classic Auto Air unit makes no mention of a compressor, compressor drive unit, condensor, expansion valve, evaporator, etc. It looks to me just to be an air handling unit that would have a blower and maybe an integrated evaporator (that's not clear) - you need to supply the rest of the refrigerant system. ibrake4oldcars
This 53 Land Cruiser that sold at the Hackenberger auction 3 years ago had a trunk mounted AC unit. It may have been retrofitted.

The compressor in that car is a modern Sanden with the clutch coil rewound to engage on 6V. Not much to it, but the trick will be finding someone that can modify the coil.
