johnworden1 16
Would anyone have an otherwise junk fuel tank they would cut the fill neck off of so I could solder it onto the pictured tank? I would like several inches of metal beyond the solder joint remaining for trimming and fitting purposes. Also what is the thread at the pickup tube? Thanks. John
Surf City '38 251
Give Steve a call at DCM, (616) 772-1165, they make complete tanks, I suspect he would sell you a neck. From memory only, 9/16 double flare fitting, would have to wait until I can get out to the shop to confirm.

johnworden1 16
Ok Dave. The tank can be junk other than the neck. Thanks. Be safe on the road. John

John You bought parts from us before? You were doing a Dodge truck that the roof-dash was rusted?
johnworden1 16
You betcha! Your parts saved the truck project. John
johnworden1 16
I would also like to know what female thread is in the tank drain hole. A flare nut fits and a pipe plug does not. I would have thought a pipe plug was used. John
Surf City '38 251
Standard thread allen plug, 3/8 or 1/2 inch, for mine. Again from memory....
johnworden1 16
Ok I'll try that. Thanks. John

johnworden1 16
Seems odd that it isn't a tapered thread plus it's a very shallow thread of only 3 or so threads. Once I figure out the thread I'll need a good fuel proof thread sealer.
ArticiferTom 278
May want to try brass pipe plug .
johnworden1 16
1/4" brass pipe plug doesn't fit.
ArticiferTom 278
It is not inverted flare ? Is there any structure in it ? 1 hour ago, johnworden1 said: 1/4" brass pipe plug doesn't fit.
johnworden1 16
Drain hole not fuel pick up tube. Pick up tube is flared. Drain hole is not flared and 2/3 threads deep.
ArticiferTom 278
Sorry my miss interpretation . I just measure mine it is 1/8 NPT not 1/4 . it was forced to deep by PO and cracked so weeps now even with tape . 45 minutes ago, johnworden1 said: Drain hole not fuel pick up tube. johnworden1 16
I'll try 1/8 NPT but I think it will be too small. Edited July 28, 2020 by johnworden1 (see edit history)
ArticiferTom 278
1/8 th NPT is about 3/8 OD of the threads with 1/16th taper . Get brass if you can . Any hardawre with plumbing should have where there flare and compression fitting are .
johnworden1 16
Problem solved. I was trying an SAE bolt I thought was 1/2"- 20 It wouldn't go. It was metric. A 1/2-20 bolt fits perfectly. I should be able to find a suitable drain plug with that thread. Thanks for the suggestions. John
