1923 Gearbox bearings

Recommended Posts

Hi John,

The numbers on your original bearings removed from your gearbox will provide the necessary information for replacements.

This is the front bearing.

I recommend the sealed style of bearing as the originals were open and allowed oil to pass out of the gearbox and down the torque tube when going uphill thereby overfilling the rear axle and causing issues with oil on the brake shoes as it leaks out of the rear wheel hubs. Not to mention lowering the gearbox oil level. The positive side effect to this was the lubrication of the universal joint so don’t forget this in your maintenance schedule. Most modern bearing brands are suitable. If you have no original bearings then Dennis Robertshaw in Melbourne can supply what you need.

I would also recommend replacing the layshaft bearings too.

If it were me I would use bearings with seal only on one side, so the lube in the transmission can do it's job.
