1927 President
While restoring my dashboard on a 1927 Studebaker President I found this mark on the back of the dashboard. It looks like a swastika but isn’t. Any thoughts what this is, a employee mark maybe?
starlightcoupe
If you notice the impression is deeper on the right and upper corners, and tapers away on the left. I don't know what it is, or why it's there. But it may well be a swastika. But, before it was adopted by the Nazis, "the swastika or sauwastika — as a character, 卐 or 卍 respectively — was a geometrical figure and an ancient religious icon in the cultures of Eurasia. It was used as a symbol of divinity and spirituality in Indian religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism." In 1927 this may have been stamped in to the dash as a blessing. Pure speculation on my part.

8E45E
More on Studebaker using the symbol here: https://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/forum/your-studebaker-forum/general-studebaker-specific-discussion/77812-stude-building-symbol-question And here: https://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/forum/your-studebaker-forum/general-studebaker-specific-discussion/30037-milt-combs-free-wheeling-studebaker-swastika-token?29299-MILT-COMBS-FREE-WHEELING-STUDEBAKER-SWASTIKA-TOKEN= Keep in mind, before the second world war, the Swastika and (to us Studebaker fans), the 'Dictator' name didn't have bad connotations linked to an oppressive government of the day.
