1969 Cutlass S rear axle width

Recommended Posts

Hello and thanks for taking time to read this.

I'd like to change to a 12 bolt rear axle if I can find one. Can anyone confirm my stock 10 bolt axle width? And what year makes and model axles will swap into my Cutlass? Any lead towards a site that lists these all together would be much appreciated!

All 1968-1972 GM A-body rear axles will physically bolt in and are the same width flange-to-flange. Note that in some cases, the driveshaft length will vary by up to an inch due to differences in the location of the pinion flange relative to the axle centerline. Expect to pay upwards of $1000 for one of the desirable axles (ie, Chevy 12 bolt) with posi and a popular gear ratio. Also be aware that the Oldsmobile Type O axle has 12 bolts on the cover but only ten bolts holding an 8.5" ring gear. A Chevy 12 bolt has twelve bolts on the cover and on the 8.875" ring gear. Nothing interchanges between the two internally and parts for the Type O are very difficult to find. Most sellers don't know the difference between the two and ask stupid money for the less desirable Type O.
