I thought it was ugly for a street car. The front end looked like a quick add-on and didn’t seem to fit all that well. Funny how things change. A good friend of mine got a 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 as a graduation present. It was orange four speed with black vinyl top and black rear spoiler. I’m sure it does, but on the TV auctions the Duster 340 is not seen very often making me think they don’t have a strong following. I still have great memories of that Duster as the owner and I were close for a long time after high school days. I was his wrench guy because his treatment of the Duster relegated him to cheap cars for a long time and he was no mechanic. We had some great times, like when he bought a 1938 LaSalle hearse for $150 and parked it in his grandmother’s driveway as he lived with her. She was none too happy to have that next to her house! At her school they have a traditional prom night car parade - tractors, horse and buggy you name it. One year my students used our survey equipment to see if a particularly large tractor would fit under the walkway. I was sweating the trucking costs big time. (10 tons and a 302 mile round trip)Then of course Prom was canceled due to the pandemic. I'm no Corvette expert (to put it very very mildly) but the only thing that's conspicuously non-original to me at a glance are the wheels, but I'm guessing you need the giant wheels to accommodate the giant brakes. While everyone might dismiss this as a modern car and a throwaway cheap car, I would argue that it changed affordable performance in the fuel injection age and, after all, it's 33 years old now. They were good cars, just carry a spare ignition module and tool to install it. It’s about the only thing that would stop one back in the day......that and a fuel pump. That moment in your life when you realize you are getting old is when the standard cars in your high school parking lot are now considered collectors cars, or worse yet antiques. A friend had the fastback in High school which he ran into a tree, just laying in the road so not a real bad accident but it messed it up enough, it wasn't worth fixing. He bought another and fixed it all up, had it painted, suspension and other performance mods, I think he even put a performance tranny in it, then got busted for driving it on the road without registering it, which put him without a license for almost a year. After that he never drove it again and sold it. After that he ended up with a rusted to death Escort wagon and delivered pizza for a while with it. Quite the downgrade. One of the smoothest cars I've ever driven. Matt Harwood Posted June 21, 2022 Author Share Posted June 21, 2022 (edited) Not quite our usual test drive video, but this is a car that has been in our family for many years and is about to go live on BringATrailer.com. I shot this brief drive to exercise the car a bit and show off its easy-going nature. Porsche 911s aren't my thing, but this car is just sublime to drive. It's wonderful on the road. We have other Porsches in the garage (including a 356C that I'll probably keep) but this was always my father's favorite to drive. Now it's time to find it a new home now that my father isn't able to enjoy it anymore. This was definitely a fun video to make. The performance of this car is just right--you can use 95% of its envelope without endangering the whole countryside and it's very involving without being strenuous. Just a joy. Like I said, not quite my thing but I totally understand why people are so passionate about these cars. Turn it up and enjoy! I took the DeSoto to town twice today and even with the windows down it gets pretty warm inside. Do you get much heat from the engine compartment into the car?
