Brake shoe lining and riveting question

Recommended Posts

I am getting ready to reline the brakes and emergency brakes on my 1919 Mclaughlin

The original brake shoe lining material was a woven material. I was wondering the good and bad of going to a  more modern brake lining material

like used in the video  link here

I worry about finding the correct width of woven brake lining and  I am also worried about it tending to unravel at the ends when you put in the rivets.

The other consideration is that the thicnkess of the hubs is not that thick and more modern linings may tear through the original hub material.

I will work on getting pictures

Your insight will be appreciated

Use only woven linnings.  The early cars will not work right with mordern linings. Trust me I have tryed it on my own cars .  I do my own relining  . Kings32

Modern or moulded linings require far more pressure between the linings and drum than can be achieved with mechanical brakes.    Must be the correct woven material.  Green Gripper or an equivalent is one most people use

I need 2 inch linings on the outside

The inside is 1 3/4 inchwide material

Send them out,the correct material and fast,I think brake doctor, clutches as well

Part of the reason I restore cars is to do as much as possible myself and learn along the way how to do things. I have a rivet machine for brakes,  just need the parts.

I do appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

Google "Moose Motors" in Penngrove, CA, 50 miles north of San Francisco.  Jeff has the right lining material and rivets, and the right equipment.  I have no association other than as a very satisfied customer.

A google search shows this business as permanently closed.

let me know contact information if this is incorrect

Thanks for your input

I sent you a PM with the phone number I have for him, although it's been almost a year since I've seen him.  Good luck!

Re-posting in the live thread.

For my brakes and clutches, I've used the Clutch Doctor

40167 Flink Ave, North Branch, MN 55056
(651) 674-4175

Super helpful, great work and prices are crazy reasonable. He may be able to help you out with lining material if you are set on doing the work yourself. I suggest giving him a call and checking on options.
