Rod P Posted November 3 Posted November 3 New York Auto Show 1900 Madison Square Hill Climb Notes: One method used to test cars in the infant days of the automobile industry. The picture shows a specially constructed incline on top of Madison Square Garden on which the hill climbing abilities of the "buzz wagons" as they were then called, were tested. It was a simple matter to descend and a real task to climb in those days. This picture was taken during the period of the first automobile show in 1900. 3
Rod P Posted November 3 Posted November 3 (edited) New York Auto Show 1900 Notes: Scene at the first Automobile Show, held in the old Madison Square Garden in 1900. At this exhibition of so-called "Devil Wagons" there were 31 exhibitors of complete cars and 20 exhibitors of parts and accessories. It seems a far cry from these few dauntless rattletraps to the 300 or more passenger cars and several hundred accessories and trucks at the 28th Annual National Automobile Show in Grand Central Palace, January 7 to 14. 1928. (Correction.) At the first show people were afraid to get close to the curious contrivances. Edited November 6 by Rod P extra info (see edit history) 4

(I think I was too distracted wondering if that was Leonardo DiCaprio's Grandfather in photo?😀) These auto show photos are from Free Library of Philadelphia, and I used their descriptions of photos and dates. The last one, 'Paris Salon general view 1929' had a blurb about American cars not being represented, even though they had something like 30 makers at exhibit. Yet you can read, Packard, Marmon, Willys Knight, on side displays signage.

I wonder just how many exhibitors and cars were actually on display in 1873, and from which countries, besides the US. Craig 1

Craig Apologies Craig, this was taken from the point of view of more recent motor show. (1928, now corrected.) Will try to be more diligent in removing misleading information. Thanks, Rod.
