Compression Questions

I've got a '37 olds with the straight six. I suspect my compression is low due to worn rings. I am trying to find out what the compression pressure should be for this engine. The original shop manual reads:

"Compression at 1000 is 146"

The compression ratio is 6.1:1. So by taking 6.1 and multiplying by atomospheric pressure 14.7 I get 89.67 psi, not 146.

What is "compression at 1000"? 1000 what?!

My cylinders are reading from 70 to 110 psi.
