Selim
My Buick super 1949 has been upgraded poorly to power steering. Previous owner changed it to a later model and for reasons of fitting it they had to cut and weld an inch from steering column . its not safe driving the car now with welded column. (Pictures attached). Need to buy steering box and column to replace the ones in my car now. Can’t find original ones AT ALL. Any clue where to get them? Or if there is alternative box and column that I could buy them as set and put them in my car ? thanks
TerryB
Can’t help with sourcing a new one but that weld job on the old one is one of the worst I’ve ever seen on a key part like that. Studeous
Indeed. Deserves at the least a mention at the annual Darwin Awards banquet. 1
FLYER15015
Since most pitman arms are forgings, one should never cut and weld them, PERIOD !!! X2 on the Darwin award ! Mike in Colorado
Selim
No question previous owner’s work on steering box and column is disastrous. Now I wanna fix this. Any clue where to get them? Replacements ? Thanks
Rusty_OToole
A quick search for 1949 Buick steering box turned up a couple of possibilities. If you spent more than 5 minutes I expect you could find more. https://www.carid.com/1949-buick-roadmaster-steering-boxes/ https://www.fatmansgarage.com/products/1949-49-buick-super-manual-steering-gear-box-column-3-speed-shifter-hot-rod-rat

FLYER15015
Quote Selim, You should post your required part in the Buick "buy / sell" forum for the best results. Just saying. Mike in Colorado

1939_Buick
Have to contacted Scott? He has a collection of 8 late 40's Buick's being sold~parted out? https://forums.aaca.org/topic/326643-i-have-a-conundrum-8-parts-cars/ https://forums.aaca.org/topic/330874-list-of-parts-cars-in-cedar-rapids-ia-continuation-and-clarification-of-the-connundrum-post/ https://forums.aaca.org/topic/330552-1949-roadmaster-riviera-hardtop-parts-car/ https://forums.aaca.org/topic/330560-1949-buick-roadmaster-sedanette/ Do you have a Buick master parts book that helps you identify if parts are common to a range of years/models? Suggest the 1928-1952 version or close. The best are a few years after your car was made Edited January 26, 2020 by 1939_Buick (see edit history)
