1932 Chrysler CI RS Coupe

Recommended Posts

My grandpa and I started restoring this back in the 1980’s, the car belonged to my dad.  We took every piece of this car apart! Every single thing.  We got it to a point that (we thought) it was ready for paint, chrome and interior that was about 1986.  The car sat in my dads shop until 2004 when he retired and decided to send the car off to a shop and have all of the bodywork we did redone, he had the chrome done, paint and interior.  He did his own style which I’m sticking with for now since he spent so much on it. It was never finished and sat again until April of 2019 when I brought it home.  My dad passed away in December of 2018.

Some of the things that were done still have me scratching my head.  Things like the engine not being as detailed as I would like, the wiring was horrible, he had the wrong rear bumper and wrong headlights. I have since found correct lights and bumper, had a new wiring harness made (exact copy of original) detailed the engine, replaced all of the Phillips screws someone had used with slot heads and a lot more, still a long way to go.

Man, the shoulder issues seem to be very common amongst us old car guys!

no kidding.  Too many years of abuse I guess, reaching into odd places, twisting and contorting to reach things that I should have had a lift to do... and my early years of hard labor.

A little more work today.  Found a Freewheeling cable from another member in here and got it installed, someone in the past had bored out the mounting hole so I had to make an escutcheon.

Anyone know what the two holes are for on either side of the handle? They have small red lights in them now but they don’t belong there.  The

Did she have some form of directional system added? That is my guess for the two lights...

Absolutely a beautiful car and she’s going to be incredible when you get done!

Could be, I stuck the lights in there because I hate empty holes.  I can’t wait to get it done..... it won’t be concours original but it also won’t be hacked up.

To be honest, I would leave the directionals unless you find out that something did go there from the factory. With the dash being painted, filling extra holes becomes a chore...

I don’t know if you decided to try fixing your temp gauge yourself, but if so PM me your address and I’ll send you an inch of the tubing needed for a coupler as I had to buy a 1’ piece.

Good luck with your car, she really is a beauty!

Thanks Mark.  I sent the gauge to Seattle Speedometer, that way he can calibrate it too.

 Jimmy,

The 2 holes could be for dash lights.

My '31 CG has them.

Looking back at your picture of the rear axle, there is a "red head" in the back ground.

Your new pictures show a silver head.

Is she really a red head ?

You may want to try soaking parts  in Evapo-Rust for clean-up of these kind of things.

Wiring wiring and a little more wiring today.  Tested out the flexibility of my shoulder today and it actually did well.  Still have some under dash work to do but that will have to wait a bit on reaching in there....

Little things take so long to do.  I’m not sure that Chrysler had the dome light switch in this position (by passenger door) but it must have been where my dad thought it belonged.  There were wires running out of an escutcheon but no switch.  I dug through my parts bin and found a push pull switch from that era, cleaned it up and installed it (had to open the hole that my dad had made, but this looks good and it’s complete)

On to the little things... my headlight switch had been broken and was not in very good shape.  A fellow member on here sent me a repairable one all the way from Zimbabwe! This morning’s project was to resurrect it.  It came out pretty good.

Very nice! What is the CLUM # on that little item? It is on the large tab under the CLUM name.

I’m pretty sure this is an 8821, not the correct p/n for my 32, but... once installed no one can tell the difference and it works perfectly. The external contacts are the same as the 9271.
