Mattml430
Door cards and side panels got cut this afternoon and fitted up. I’ve used 4mm marine ply. I was lucky enough to have Pete cut some templates for me from some originals. Made it very easy and accurate. Still need to fit a couple of bits up in the back to fix the rear panels. Going to try my hand at a bit of upholstery work. I figured if I started on the easy parts I should be a bit use to it by the time I get to the seats. The worst that can happen is I stuff it up. Ive done a bit of practicing on some scrap leather. Edited December 10, 2020 by Mattml430 (see edit history)
Mattml430
Got the body of today so I can get onto painting and fitting up the chassis. made a trolley for the body so I can move it around and paint it a bit easier. I want to spend a fair few days on it over the Christmas break.

Mattml430
For anyone that is sick of points this electronic ignition fits in the small north east distributor quite neatly. I know some people might not like the idea but the engines do run much smoother with them fitted. Also start really well. Obviously no good for the 6volt cars. I have changed mine to 12volt. Ive used it in my other cars with good success. It’s very simple to fit and hook up. All I had to adjust was just under the rotor button to clear the trigger LED. FAST make it and I picked this one over here for about $186. It’s the kit that suits the Lucas distributor. Has 3 small wires coming out of the side.
Mattml430
Well the shed has been emptied of everyone else’s stuff/ shit except Rich and Terry’s bits 🤣 and it’s going to be all about the roadster for 3 weeks. Started on getting the chassis painted today with still a bit of prep work to be done. Rear guards and bonnet are almost ready for some colour. pistons have all been machined to within.002” of each other to TDC. Will be balancing all the parts next before assembly.
Mattml430
I’ve got all my engine parts balanced and have come to a bit of a stop on the engine rebuild. The Gudgeon pin circlips are to small and my ring gap is to big so I’ll have to get another set of rings and circlips sent out. The rings they sent vary from.012” to .016” so my engine rings are worn out before I even start. Bit annoying but shit happens. So it was onto some painting today and got the rear guards painted and they will get a wet rub and polish in the morning. Chassis is painted in its final under coat ready for sanding and it’s satin black paint tomorrow or Monday. Bonnet and side curtains are hanging up ready for painting at about 5:00 in the morning before even the birds are up. Best time for painting when you haven’t got a spray booth to paint in.
RichBad
Holy smoke mate you go quick! Pain about the pistons - that’s unusual. The rear guards came up a treat mate!

I’d rather fit each individual ring myself to get them perfect. Im real happy with the guards they came up pretty nice. Now we just need to get your guards to look the same mate. I’m sure they will they look pretty straight with the undercoat on. 👌

Mattml430
Thanks Ron, yer it’s a pain but not much I can do about it. Hopefully we can get Rich’s bits knocked over these holidays too. All other work in the shed has been barred unless it’s dodge. 👍 1
Mattml430
Rear guards are finished wet rubbed them with 1000, 1500 & 3000 Pretty happy with the end result. I use the 3M trizact orbi pads and then finish it of with the 3M perfect it polishing system. It has 3 stages with 3 different mops. Works really well.
Mattml430
Bonnet and side curtains got painted this morning and will be wet rubbed the same as the guards tomorrow. If it’s not raining or windy in the morning I’ll be getting the chassis in satin black. I have to do the side of the chassis in the colour to match the guards. I’ll do that after the black. It’s all rubbed and blocked back ready for painting.

Mattml430
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited at this stage of the restoration. She is on stands next to her sister. They’ve been apart for 91years. 😂 assembly will be fun.

Thanks Doug I’m using glasurit clear over base. Which is a 2K polyurethane clear coat. It’s pretty nice paint to use. Makes a Dodge’y painter look good. Alan Cutler
I have been scratching my head to figure out how he is able to paint and assemble so fast....I referenced several of my Hardbound Encyclopedia Britannica's, and the Interwebs (if it is written, it must be true), and I have come to the realization, they are so fast because they are always a day ahead of us in the States...Cheers Mate(s), Happy New Year to those Down Under! nearchoclatetown
I'm telling you he started on this four years ago. It's time lapsed photography just like the tomato plant that grows in 15 seconds. Have a good new year and stay safe.
Mattml430
Happy new year to you guys also. Hope you all have a great new year’s. I will get tomorrow’s news paper and hold it next to the chassis and take a picture for proof. 😂🤣 It’s definitely because we are a day ahead here and 2 hours ahead of Ron in WA. The front guards are slowing me up a bit. I wanted to try get some undercoat on these today but I don’t think I’ll get there.

Mattml430
Been getting the body and doors prepped. started on the pin striping this morning. Hopefully if all goes well I’ll be painting the rest of it in the morning. There will be a bit of masking to be done this afternoon.
Mattml430
If this comes out without a miss masked spot I’ll be very surprised. Your brain has to work in reverse and mine struggles in forward. 😳
nearchoclatetown
Matt, I thought I sent a response a while ago, guess it's lost in space. I have never seen anyone paint the pinstripe before the panel. Is that a down under trick?
Mattml430
Not sure but it just made sense to me to Do it that way because it’s only 3mm wide. Less masking up also. Using 3mm fineline tape it should come out perfect. Haha. I’ll let you know in about 2 hours. 👍

Just about to give it all a wet rub and polish. I managed to get a couple of runs of 2 of the beads at the back.
