38Buick 80C
The water pump is gonna be the death of me, I swear. I bought 2 replacement pumps. On is correct factory, the other is close but not quite. I started to rebuild the correct one. This time being very careful with the bushing removal. All was going well as the one bushing was pressing out nicely. Then it got to the other bushing and that one refused to budge. Obviously I'm gun shy on putting a lot of press force on it. I tried multiple times but no bueno. Of course by then the bushing driver was stuck and I managed to mangle it to all hell getting it loose. Better the tool than the water pump and it's MAC Tool so lifetime warranty, but ugh. I'm boxing it all up and sending it out to Arthur Gould to finish the rebuild... I may use the incorrect one temporarily juts to be able to run the motor but I'm not rebuilding it. 38Buick 80C
Now on to the dash. I forgot to mention it got it back yesterday too. I can partially build it up. I've thought about installing it but think I will wait for the firewall pad to arrive. When's the last time you saw a 90 year old NOS part like this speedo with 0 miles.
38Buick 80C
I still need to do the wood graining on the dash bezel. I ordered a replacement surround which will be in brass and still need to be nickel plated once it arrives....from Australia!!! The temp guages is at Bob's being rebuilt and face painted. I've got just about all other bits in hand and ready to go back on with a few bits at the plater.

38Buick 80C
Played with the dash wiring. The harness is older repro, never used. I think it is a Harnesses Unlimited harness and Paul sent me his numbering system, but it doesn't match perfect. I think I have it all sorted and matched the numbers and wire colors up and renumbered his cheat sheet. I have a RI Harness cheat sheet too but it is very different. I also took the opportunity to do the coil to distributor wire. Edited May 30, 2020 by 38Buick 80C (see edit history)
38Buick 80C
Playing with the license plates too. I have a NC dealer tag and a couple sets of NJ tags. The NJ tags are a Bergen County set (my hometown country and a W (Warren Co.??) With numbers I REALLY like. The NC tag has a maroon background which I could simply paint to match the car, but I think I'm going to go with the NJ set with the numbers I like. There a little pitted so I'm using up some random extra purple paint and primer in one to fill them. They will be a grey background with white numbers when done. 38Buick 80C
Well this absolutely kicked my you know what and I'm not even done. Between the gas tank cover not lining up and the rear bumper mounting bolts holy $#!@ I'm spent. Not sure what to do here. The gas tank cover has holes, the fender doesn't. Looked like I should have something there but what? Edited June 6, 2020 by 38Buick 80C (see edit history)
38Buick 80C
Luggage rack partially on. I'm missing the linkage on one side. I'm sure it is here somewhere. 38Buick 80C
Ok that's the last time I push that car back in to the garage. It is getting too heavy the more I bolt on. I better get this radiator and water pump sorted so I can get it running...😓🥵 Granted if I put the front bumpers on it won't fit in the stall anymore... 38Buick 80C
Not too much planned for today. Mostly sanding and preparing parts like these for wood graining. The purple need more wet sanding so burning up weird paint colors. The plate is getting pretty close.grey is the correct background color for that year Edited June 7, 2020 by 38Buick 80C (see edit history)

Sit and watch that work for a while - someone made the reproduction part wrong via shrinkage in casting or ..., something is flipped he wrong direction, a screw is binding up, or - I am leaning toward the shaft being too long. Or perhaps gasket is binding up. Edited June 7, 2020 by John_Mereness (see edit history)

Given the gap, perhaps go with a piece of rubber. it's both fenders and both are in VERY nice shape, so while that was my thought initially too i really don't think that is the case. I've been looking around and found this photos which seems to show a piece with hooks that bolts to the gas tank cover

38Buick 80C
Another thing i am trying to figure out. I took a look at the interior window curtains I have. I have a full set plus spares. I am trying to figure out how to remove the mounts from them to put the repro ones on. That's gonna take some more fiddling as there is some spring loaded mechanism in the rods. That was my thought, but it may be only a hair off - aka on the flip side of the coin I believe that somehow the mechanism does some sort of binding thing when it is locked and you do not want to get too aggressive and loose that feature. Thanks I just went and confirmed the support rod etc is not in a bind. it's like the door or the "hinge" needs to be "bent" in a some, but not ready to do that yet. Will look at how that foot latch attaches and see what adjustments are in there, but again it has more to do with how the door mounts to the body. and yes I tried it on both sides of the body and this is the better side. I guess the hinge or the door could need a tweak, but that is "bad for the paint" - If the door closes just fine without foot latch on, then I am thinking it is some sort of casting issue in shrinkage or how they drilled the holes. 38Buick 80C
A productive day though I didn't actually work on the car. My rope rails arrived from Australia. Just need to get the bar/rod made for between them. The water pump is rebuilt and heading back my way. Also the speedo cable is done too. The firewall pad shipped as well...I think. Now if I ever get this radiator and grill back I might get this thing running.
38Buick 80C
Forgot, with help from Jesse Morton I got the tank cover to fender scenario figured out... There are little clips (I have found 4 of 6 needed) that hold them together.
38Buick 80C
Yesterday I built up the front bumper assembly just to accomplish something. No pictures. This morning my first project is this. That's right I finally got all the grill back. I purposely locked the slats open as I know the thermostaic adjustment device is non functioning.
