GasWorksGarage
Hello, I am in need of the firing order of the 287, actually what I need to know is which terminal on the distributor is #1. Its location to the hold down clip? Thanks
The 55er
You're all set! Rotation is CCW.
Rick Hoover
Your firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 The hold down clip in the back towards the firewall lays between #4 and #8. The next one to the right, or toward the drivers side is #1. Distributor rotation in counter clockwise. Hope this helps.

JACK M
I never assume that the distributor is installed in its factory position. Pull the # 1 spark plug and stick your finger over the hole and have a helper quickly jog the starter (tiny bumps) until you get compression. Then adjust to the timing mark on the balancer. Then open the distributor and observe that the rotor is pointing at the real #1 position.
