I never assume that the distributor is installed in its factory position.

Pull the # 1 spark plug and stick your finger over the hole and have a helper quickly jog the starter (tiny bumps) until you get compression. Then adjust to the timing mark on the balancer.

Then open the distributor and observe that the rotor is pointing at the real #1 position.
