aunty norm
I have unfortunately had a overdrive failure in my 1937. So I'm' looking for a replacement planetary unit or gears to suit a R-6 overdrive. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully accepted! I was hoping to have it fixed before the next rally in 5 weeks time, but I maybe to ambitious! I might have to look for a replacement overdrive to suit my 1937 dodge instead? Thanks Terry
Spinneyhill
What is wrong with it? I can't see from here - my telescope is too short. Mine ('39) was pretty puffed. The planetary gears were in good condition, just slightly oversize inside (0.0015"). The needle bearings were worn square and barrel shaped. The gears rocked alarmingly. I had new pins made, slightly oversize and put in new needle bearings. I couldn't get individual needles so I put in a full complement caged needle bearing - it was a perfect fit. The only problem with this fix is that the needles are a bit shorter than the individual needles because there is a cage at each end.

aunty norm
In answer to the comments, what wrong with it. Is has chewed up the three bronze gears and springs plus the gear's teeths are pretty well rusted beyond use! The cage itself is well worn (stuffed) where the end of the pins rub. Other than that it looks good!

aunty norm
Thanks for all the replies. I have located all the parts I required! But now I'm in need of information on how to put it back together! Any diagrams and instructions on a R-6 overdrive would be a great help! It might just stop me in making a mistake in assembly. I did look on the Internet, but only found stuff on R-10 (electric) The R- 6 is mechanical only. So please help! Terry
Spinneyhill
Xclnt. I'll look at it tomorrow for you. It is bed time now. The 1938 Studebaker will be very similar and there is probably something in MoToR's Manual.... I have this image; I must have posted it before. Spinneyhill
National Service Data manual pages: restorecarsclassifieds.com/wiki/show_pdf.pdf?n=4849 restorecarsclassifieds.com/wiki/show_pdf.pdf?n=4850 OK, 1937 Studebaker OD is not simple. There was the Dictator, which changed to the second type during the year, then there was the President OD, which was new and different. The President could be cut in or out of OD at any speed above 35 mph, without electric control. I wonder which is most similar to your version? On further research I seem to find that the 1937 Dodge did not have an OD trans. offered. So what do you have? I see in 2017 you said you had "On further investigation, It appears to be R6 -1 OD and a T86-1P W.G.DIV 11.19.35 box." T86-1P was native to Chrysler '37 C14, Imp; C16. Roy.; also De Soto '37. But that doesn't square with the casting date you also seem to have given of Nov 1935? aunty norm
Thanks for the help! You are right my 1937 did not have an overdrive,I fit one that I brought from a bloke which was a complete unit as per the photo. He said that it was out of a Chrysler. The numbers you have are correct R-6 O/D & T86-1P box
Spinneyhill
there are four pages of info. on them at (scroll down a bit): http://p15-d24.com/blogs/entry/88-the-rough-field-spotters-guide-for-mopar-overdrives/ Remember: NO gear oil with EP additives in the gearbox unless the Copper Strip Corrosion Test result is 1a (ASTM D130), because there are important brass parts in there. aunty norm
Will start to assemble the overdrive box tomorrow! But will take my time , and hopefully get it right! I was lucky enough to find all the parts. But the only question I have is how to adjust the clutch unit.
Spinneyhill
You have the "new" 1937 overdrive as fitted to Chrysler etc. and Studebaker 3C. Here is the Studebaker manual on it. Hopefully all you need is there.
