Whats wrong with my car?

I have a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 3.1 (engine) and when I start it up sometimes it will quit and wont start up again. Sometimes it will start and run just fine and then sometimes it wont start period. I replaced the control module thinking this was the problem, but after that it continues. Could it be the fuel filter? The pump is working good, and all of the fuses and all plugs are working great. Please help me. I'm on my last nerve with this problem......... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

Start with the cheap stuff, I would check the electrical connections, battery, starter wires. What age is the car and what is the fuel delivery system. Depending on age the fuel filter maybe the problem. If it is fuel injected, check the harness, the wires may be frayed somewhere but not enough to cause a short. Good luck

Know someone who had similar problems with their cutlass. These cars seem to have known troubles with the stock security protection. But after his system checked ok, he found his trouble related to a wire going into the fuse box was secured with a slightly striped bolt. You might check it out on your car.

Hope you find the problem.

have you tried using a noid light on on of the injectors to see if it fires? possable power feed to the computer (has two feeds) one hot at all times, other with ign on, flacky coil pack or crank sensor, as pulse off crank sensor is used to fire the injectors as well as the coils. fuel pump relay, oil pressure switch (also used to shut off the fuel pump) .. best to get the schematic and see what you are missing to run the motor and go from there.

If the fuel filter hasn't been changed in a while I would change it, it can't hurt. You may want to check into the crank/cam senser also. That's where it gets its referance for fireing. Check for codes. Check all connections. Check for proper voltages. Intermittent problems are the toughest ones to find. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you find.

  • 2 months later...

I have the same problem with my 95 Cutlass Ciera 3.1L. Had the fuel pump replaced. Problem seemed to clear up. About 3 months later symptoms appeared again. Back to the shop and fuel pump replaced again but for free this time saying was faulty pump from supplier. About 3 months later (present) symptoms are back again. Sometimes will die while driving, a nightmare for the wife! Also have a discharging problem that drains battery just overnight and sometimes acts like alternator is not working at all. Had battery and alternator checked and was okay. Was told by NAPA employee that checked all this that starter needed replaced and was causing starter drag but was not faulted with the new NAPA battery. Have found similar complaints posted on National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. Interesting huh? Hope you and I find some answers.
