battery drain

Recommended Posts

My 90 convertible is unreliable as if I don't disconnect the battery, it drains in 3-4 days and won't start when I want to use the car.  What are some of the possibilities that would cause the battery to go down?  My coupe does the same thing, but the battery stays charged for a much longer time.

A bad diode in the alternator will drain a battery. A shorted cell in the battery will also cause a quick discharge. If your coupe is also a Reatta, you could swap between them to see if the problem moves.

GM spec for a car with everything turned off is 50 ma max. My cars run about 30ma. 200 ma will drain a battery in a few days and many things can cause, just have to use triage.

I have little 80ma HF float chargers on all cars I do not drive every few days.
