Guest
Today I tried to start my 58 again and it wouldnt turn over so by trail and error I followed wires. On the fender well I found a relay? (solenoid) with two wires going to it. Buy using a screw driver and jumping across these I got the car to start. I let it warm up and shut it off and when I tried to start it I again had to jump across these points. What is this box called and where would I get a new one. If this is even the problem I dont know but it would be a place to start.
------------------
Guest
Sid--
Believe you are describing the solenoid or the fusable link between the battery and the starter. Before replacing it, try unhooking both wires or cables, and take a file or a knife and clean all of the contacts. Most likely, they will be dirty, corroded, and almost incapable of conducting electricity, as mine were on my car.
Pete Phillips
BCA #7338
Guest
I have a 60 Buick and mine is a four terminal relay. One is the feed or the hot, Two is the switch which is activated when you press the gas pedal. Three is the ground, and Four is the accessory or the wire to the starter. With my car unless the battery is FULLY charged the relay won't click (in other words the switch won't close the circuit between the hot and the starter) So make sure your battery is fully charged!!! rmartens
They say there are no dumb questions...but this might be a dumb answer given I know nothing about the '58. My '56 has a 2 wire ballast resistor on the firewall leading to the carb starting circuit. Not sure if this is what you're talking about...
