Chasander
Looking for opinions and recommendations on after market radios. Retrosound verses Custom autosound. I had my orginal AM radio in my 66 GS converted to FM stereo by Antique Auto Sound and was very much dissatisfied, so conversion is not an option. Turbinator
Sir, 63Riviera gave me a lead for a gent that owns Precision Stereo Repair in New York State. I don’t know if my experience and information will be helpful for you, but here goes, The gent cleaned oil ed adjusted my original AM radio to increase bass and treble response. Also, the original radio was adjusted to accept and play mp3 music. The input connection of the mp3 is in my ash tray. The gent supplied a 6x9 original size speaker with the correct ohms for my radio. The gent is a one man operation who knows his business at the expert level. The gents customer service is 5 star. The fees for the work and shipping came in less than $300.00. If you want any more info just ask I’ll dig up the particulars. Turbinator
NC1968Riviera
In installed the RetroSound "Hermosa" radio and their 4x10 and 6x9 dual coil speakers in my 68 last summer. I also bought Bezel # 126, which I had to modify to fit the dash hole opening. I have been very happy with the operation of the new radio and speakers. RetroSound also has a new radio that requires no bezel for the dash radio hole. They state the radio will fit existing 60's and 70's GM radio openings. It's called the "Daytona" Read about it here: https://www.retromanufacturing.com/pages/retrosound-daytona-radio I documented the swap in my 68 on this ROA forum thread: Edited March 13, 2019 by NC68Riviera (see edit history)
RivNut
Are you planning to use the original front and rear speaker locations or going for 4 (or more) speakers? If you're going to use the two original speakers - assuming that you have the optional rear speaker, you might consider using your original radio and adding a Redi-Rad to it. https://redirad.com/ Call Matt and discuss it with him. steelman
Chasander has a 63, so rear speaker only. I have found a nice 6x9 with an internal tweeter that will fit and give good sound, but you buy these in pairs. I need to see what brand I was looking at. This is also on my To-Do list for this spring. I have the new antenna that will fully retract. My Wonderbar never has worked. I want something to fit the dash and looks like it belongs. I am leaning towards the Custom Autosound, but have not pulled the trigger. But I need tunes, and do not want to use my phone or a separate Bluetooth speaker. RivNut
i'm sure that you're aware but I'm going to be redundant and repeat it. Your OE radio needs10 ohm speakers (8 ohms will pass.} If you use new 4 ohm speakers it won't be long before you cook that original radio. Newer aftermarket radios use the 4 ohm speakers. Just make sure that whichever route you choose, you pair things properly. There are companies out there that can put a new radio receiver in your OE chassis so you'll have the original look. Turnswitch does both conversions or supplies new speakers for old radios. http://www.turnswitch.com/ Ed
Seafoam65
On my car the original A/M radio sounded fantastic, so I ordered a REDI RAD radio conversion device that plugs directly into the antenna jack on the A/M radio in series with the antenna cable, and that enables you to plug an MP3 into the provided extension cord that I routed behind the ash tray on the console. Not expensive, very easy to install and sounds great. My car has the rear speaker option so it really sounds great. 1

About $250. I bought a new 6x9 speaker (10 ohm) for between the back seats from Electro/Tech for about $50. I highly recommend Rob's work and now my radio sounds great: Here's his website: http://delcorepairs.com/ For speakers look here: http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm Hope this helps,
RivNut
Besides the 6x9 that mentioned above, Turnswitch (Electro Tech) also sells a 10 ohm 4 x 10 speaker that is narrow enough to go in the dash pad of the 64 and 65. http://www.turnswitch.com/speakers.htm Edited March 14, 2019 by RivNut added link (see edit history)

Chasander
I have a 63 with AM and rear speaker only. The volume was noisy and I had it cleaned but soon was scratchy again. Thanks for all the replies. Currently using FM converter mounted in ash tray. It passes but not the most desirable.

Chas, turn the thing off and sing your own songs..... when you are driving by yourself. I do that and no one complains. Turbinator
