Just finished new king pins and brakes on my 32 66S and would like to know how they should be adjusted?

worried I have to tight but don't want them to loose as I drive it in California traffic.

old shoes were like new and adjust to drag slightly but would not stop the car.

The first question on the brakes is "are the linings of woven  material or are the the bonded type?"  You need woven linings on these mechanical brake cars. Follow the brake adjusting instructions in the "Specifications and Adjustments 1932 manual.

Bob is certainly correct.  However, here are simple things to check:

  • Actuating levers should be perpendicular to the direction the rods are pulling them when the brakes are applied.  This provides maximum leverage.
  • External contracting brakes should have  0.010 clearance at the anchor point and between 0.015" - 0.020" around each side of the drum.
  • Test on dirt or gravel to find which wheels do not lock-up and adjust until all stop about the same.
