Those are good books on early upholstery, but describing upholstery work with the written word is very difficult.

 

Your friend needs to find an experienced trimmer who will spend some time showing him procedures and tricks.  I can show you more in three hours than you’d learn from the books in two weeks...

 

I’m fairly good at writing, and have tried to explain some trimming tricks before in written form, it’s very difficult.

 

As to the headliner, I’ve done a headliner with a hidden stitch, but used a sewing machine made to do that.  A curved needle, and adjusted just right goes only part way into the fabric.  Problem is that most headliners are light fabric, and to sew this way you need a much heavier fabric....
