1960 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible

You already know my penchant for unrestored, original cars, and while this one isn't quite as remarkable as that 3600-mile 1956 Olds, it's certainly a more significant car. I've been over this 39,078-original-mile 1960 Cadillac pretty carefully and can confirm that it's original paint, chrome, and interior. It was owned by my friend and client who passed away recently, and of all his many cars, this was the only one he truly loved and now we're helping his widow find it a new home. I helped him buy this car about three years ago from another dealer and that dealer claimed everything, including the engine bay, was 100% original and 100% perfect. I don't know if that's entirely true simply because it looks too nice, even for only 39,000 warm-weather miles. I believe it has been out of the car to be detailed and perhaps even rebuilt since there are no numbers on the stamping pad, which suggests it has been decked (although they may just be faint and hidden under the paint--it's so nicely done I'm not really interested in scraping it off). Either way, it's beautifully tuned so it starts almost instantly, idles smoothly with a nice V8 burble from the twin tailpipes, and pulls the gigantic car around with genuine authority. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the way this car drives.

 

With original code 12 Olympic White paint, you know there's no botched bodywork underneath, and while it shows a few nicks and marks that are inevitable with age, they are few and far between--someone obviously loved this car all its life. The optional two-tone leather interior is perhaps even more inviting with a little bit of use rather than shiny perfection; there's no damage, just some wrinkles in the leather. Everything works, including the power windows, the signal-seeking radio, power antenna, and even the clock ticks away reliably. The trunk is unmarked and I believe that's the original spare tire with a pinstripe whitewall. There's a brand new white power convertible top but the original top and rear curtain are included and are in decent shape if you really need them--not sure why, but there they are nonetheless. Seat belts were added at some point and the red rubber floor mats are reproductions. It also has a recent exhaust system, new shocks, new gas tank, and fresh disposables (plugs, wires, hoses, battery, etc.). I do not believe the wire wheels were original equipment but they certainly look spectacular, and it sits on recent 235/75/15 wide whitewall radials that are a nice improvement on the road.

 

Do I consider it a pure survivor? Meh, I'd say probably. It isn't restored but 75-80% of it is unquestionably original, and it's absolutely the best-driving vintage ragtop I've ever experienced. No rattles, no shakes, no tremors through the steering wheel. The doors close with a gentle click and even as a convertible, it's surprisingly quiet inside at speed with the top and windows up. You can't help but feel like a movie star when you drive it. Original cars really are better and this one really is excellent in every possible way. Original books and manuals are included. Asking price is $109,900, which is about $25,000 less than it was three years ago. A superior car, easily capable of HPOF showing but it will likely score well against restored cars in judged competition with the AACA or CLC. If you seek the best, I don't think there are many better than this. What a car!

Thanks for the info! I'll get it in the air and double-check the number. I always thought it was on the traditional stamping pad on the right side of the engine--most of the '40s and '50s Cadillacs had numbers there. I don't really have any doubts that this is the original engine, but it will be good to have confirmation. Thanks!

Yes, the VIN number will be stamped at that location.

 

The engine number will be on the LH side of the engine, at the back near the firewall on a flat area there.  The engine unit number in this area will differ from the VIN.  I've seem them off by a few digits because some engines were discarded at the factory if they didn't meet QC testing.
