Is there a list of the differences between model years for Buick’s?

Just curious if there is a list someone has composed of the differences Or changes made from each model year to the next for Buick’s?

 

Would be nice to know what the major differences were for each model year vs the previous!  Would certainly be an interesting read for someone new to these cars.... like me!

The book  Seventy Years of Buick  by G H Dammann  lists most of the changes as per model year.   About the only years where there were not changes in the teens and 20,s  was 1919 to 20   and  1921 to 22.   But even saying this in 1922 Buick reintroduced the 4 cylinder line.

1928.  I believe 1928 was the first year for an adjustable front seat also.

 

The other big differences that I can remember is that 1924 ro 1927 had very similar fenders, Dash,  headlights and parking lights. 1923 and 1928 were different styles.

 

1924 was the last year of the four-cylinder engine.  It was also the first year for four wheel brakes.

 

1925 was the first year of the master 6 series.

 

1926 gave you a headlight dimmer switch on the steering column near the horn button, and lowered the headlight crossbar to attach between the headlight brackets instead of the headlight bodies, which meant left and right headlights were now the same instead of having to be specified left and right. Also the starter generator was replaced with a separate starter and a separate generator.  And it was 1926 or maybe 1927 when the speedometer and light switch on the dash swapped places, once they realized that you didn't need the light switch close to the driver anymore because you could dim the headlights from the steering wheel, so they put the speedometer more in front of the driver instead of way over to the right.

 

1927 got you a one piece windshield instead of a split windshield for open cars.

1931 was Buick's first year for the synchrosmash transmission

 

1918 was the first year for flat asbestos clutch plates instead of leather cones

1914 Added Electric Start and electric lighting 

our (former) 1914 B-37 was a fantastic driver

 

Our current all-original unrestored 1937 80C Roadmaster Phaeton (Convertible Sedan) 

is among the best cars I've ever driven (and has amazing provenance - Parade Car for NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia).

This was the last year for rear leaf springs as the 1938 model year introduced coil springs at all four wheels

And probably the single most important mechanical feature was the removable cylinder head on the 6-Cylinder engines which came along in 1924.  Buick ran with the caged-valve technology for 20 years.  I like to think that the attitude back then was - 'if it ain't broke, don't go tryin' to fix it'.  Marty shoulda hung onto that 1914!  A beautiful automobile for sure - and it was a Buick!

1919 _   Metal panels covered all engine moving parts,  where as 1918 had a fully exposed engine.   Round ignition and                    light switch   compared to the rectangular pull push switch of 1918.

1920_   Virtually identical to 1919

1921 _  New streamlined  body shape,  with higher hood and cowl running straight through to doors rather than turning  up at the windscreen.  curved windscreen pillars rather than the straight pillars of 1920.

1922 _  Six cylinder cars,  Identical to 1921.   4 cylinder cars reintroduced  (engines had separate head and block,  )                        where as the 6,s still used   the caged valves. 

1923 _  Crown fenders and drum headlights introduced.  Six cylinder open cars had a rectangular rear window instead  of the oval window    used  previously. Last year for  the caged valves engine.

1924 _  New body shape with the Packard style radiator shell,  in both the 4,s and the 6,s.    Wheel bases increase to                      120"  and 128" on the 6   cylinder cars.  New six cylinder engine of 255 cu inch  with detachable head.                                   Introduction of 4 wheel brakes on all models. Last year  for the 4 cylinder cars

1925 _  Introduction of the new small 6 cylinder car with a 191 cu inch engine,   on  a 114" wheelbase chassis.  Called                     the Standard Six..  The   larger 6,s now being called the Master Six.  This was the first year enclosed cars  outsold  the open cars.  Round intake manifold    compared to the square manifold of 1924.

1926 _  Engines on both the Master and Standard were increased in size to  207 cu inch and  274 cu inches                                       respecively.  Clutch  changes  from  the discs having tabs on the side to having splines all round.  The radiator  shells   had a more  rounded contouer than in 1925. The single starter/generator that Buick had used since  1914,  was replaced by two   separate units.  An air filter was introduced.  There was now no left and right   headlights,  instead the lights were mounted on the bar   running between the fenders.  This year   was  Buicks highest production,  of 266,753  and would not be passed until  1940.

1927 _  Very little change to 1926.   New rubberised engine mounts.  One piece windscreen.

 1928 _  Some one else will have to continue for 1928 as I have never had a 1928.   I have not seen Dave B with his 28                     on   the forum for a long   time .

Hi Rod, I’ve been lurking, 

 

For ‘28 the shift pattern went to the regular three speed pattern we all know, the ignition switch moved to the steering column with a locking steering column, the light switch moved to the steering, new back up light, Standard series gas and temp gauge on the dash, shock absorbers factory installed equipment, hand crank went through the bottom tank of the radiator on the standard, two strut rods from cowl to radiator,  new distributor, “v” fan belt in master series, lots of engine tweaks, back to two piece windshield on open cars, no adjustable seat in standard series sorry to say, last year for all nickel. 29 had chrome exterior and nickel interior.

1910 was the year the 2 cylinder engine was mounted transversely and put into the engine compartment, with a starter crank in  the front.

 

1904 to 1909 it was mounted longitudinally under the front seat, starter crank on the side.

Completely different engines.  Only similarity is they are both two cylinders.

Wasn't it the 1911 model year when the Model 14 came out with 2 cylinder engine in front? Certainly a different engine for Buick as it was one of the few non overhead valve engines, L head.

The guy in the video says his is a 1910.

 

The model 14 had an engine with valves in head like the 159 engine, and horizontally opposed at 180 degrees like the 159, and it had a bore of 4.5 inches like the 159, but the stroke was shortened from 5 inches to 4, to help it fit transversely, 2.25 x 2.25 x pi x 4 x 2 is 127 cubic inches, and the external valve train at each end was redesigned, also so it would fit transversely, and the takeoff was at the flywheel, so yeah, everything was different.

 

I have no records of a Buick L-head, just the 4 cylinder T-heads made in Jackson.

Buick Model 14, also known as the Buggyabout.

The only L head Buick, engine in front not under the seat, double chain drive.

Yes they also made a few T heads.

I an not the Buick expert either. I believe the 14B was the 14 with the gas tank on back deck rather than under the seat, maybe lowered sporty steering column too.

As we know many owners seem to back date their cars, but a car built and sold in the last months of a calendar year and sold as the new next year model are usually called that next year car. A car built October of 2018 as a new 2019 model is a 2019 especially when discussing it over the counter in the parts department.

As far as Bonhams... It often seems that auction house descriptions are bits and pieces taken out of context from the internet and mixed with misinformation from the owner by non-auto employees of the auction house who are trying to fill up the information section.

Does the picture look like an overhead valve engine to you? I think Buick did not use overhead valves on this model because it would have made the engine too wide.
