'72 LeSabre
While I've got the oil pan off my 1937 Roadmaster to replace a leaky gasket, I pulled the oil pump to check it and clean the screen. The gears and housing look good. The cover has minor wear. The notch at the end of the shaft has some wear. Is this wear acceptable? Would you re-install and keep driving? The oil pressure has been good. It does get near zero when the motor is hot and idling. I'll resurface the plate as suggested to Liesberg in his thread. Are there torque specs for the oil pan? The new gasket is cork.
Hubert_25-25
That looks like pretty mild wear to me. I would use it as is. You could surface the end plate, but that looks really good. Also look at the pin that fits in the slot in the shaft. My shaft had a little more wear in it then yours, but I left the shaft alone. I did replace the pin. My pin was about 2 blocks short of shearing off. Hugh
DonMicheletti
I'll go along with Hubert. It looks pretty good. Huberts pin wear is horrible. I replaced my drive pin with a roll pin. Since the roll pin is spring steel it is tougher. Plastigage the gear end clearance. It should be from .0005" to .oo4". In my opinion, the gasket is unnecessary - never seen in more modern engines. If the cover plate is good and flat, leakage would be minimal, and even if it does, the oil ends up in the pan.
dibarlaw
I rebuilt my pump in my 37 Special back in 1988. At the time I was able to get new gears. I cleaned the screen and lapped the bottom cover plate. We have put over 10,000 miles on the car in 6 years. Today I am still keeping 45 lbs pressure at normal running speeds. On an all day hot drive it drops to about 20 lbs.
