Heading to USA

Simon Anderson

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I will be heading over to USA form Australia from the 16th Nov till the 5th Dec.

Just seeing if there are any interesting places I should visit. I fly into Dallas and will be heading over to Tulsa, Memphis and possibly to Charlotte.

We are interested in anything transport related (cars, truck, motorcycle, airplane.)  also music, swap meets, car shows even a bit of drag racing

Would be interested to catch up with fellow Model 20 Hupp owners also if time allows.

Since your traveling from Tulsa to Memphis you will pass near the Museum of Automobile http://www.museumofautos.com/ in Morrilton, Arkansas. It’s been many years since I’ve been there but it it had a nice collection. It’s in a state park and there’s a CCC lodge there if your looking for an overnight stay off the beaten path. https://www.arkansasstateparks.com/parks/petit-jean-state-park

In Memphis there’s Graceland (Elvis’s home) https://www.graceland.com/sitemap.aspx, Beal Street, Memphis Music Hall of Fame http://memphismusichalloffame.com/, Nashville has the Country Music Hall of Fame https://countrymusichalloffame.org/, the Lane Motor Museum https://www.lanemotormuseum.org/. It’s winter here so bring warm clothes. Wind chill this morning in NW Tennessee is 16 degrees F (-8 C).

If if you have time to detour come on up to Union City, TN and visit Discovery Park of America https://discoveryparkofamerica.com/

Winter is not the best time to visit Michigan and doesn't look like its on your itinerary so I'd suggest to come back in August for Henry Ford Museum, Sloan Museum (Buicks), RE Olds Museum, Gilmore Museum (Cadillac, Lincoln, Franklin, CCCA, Pierce Arrow, Model A Ford and lots more), Stahl Foundation (100+ fabulous vehicles plus awesome vintage music machines), Ypsilanti Auto Heritage (Corvair, Hydramatic, Tucker, Checker plus fire museum just down the street), Detroit Historical Museum (Cadillac body drop) plus a side trip to Auburn Indiana (NATMUS, Auburn Cord Duesenburg and Model A Ford) and Elkhart Indiana (RV/Motorhome Museum).  Plus Auto Baron Homes (mansions), historic factories such as Ford Piquette and Rouge Plant not to mention the amazing Woodward Dream Cruise (World's Largest 1 day auto event which lasts all week) with 40,000+ vintage, hotrod, classic, special interest vehicles of all types enjoyed by 1.5 million auto fans.  And almost forgot Back to the Bricks in Flint, same time as Woodward - another huge auto event - shows / cruise nights / concerts / extravaganza.  And if your lucky, you might get into the GM Heritage Center.  Can't forget to mention the Lingenfelter Collection in Brighton Michigan, the M1 Concours / Roadkill Nights right on Woodward in Pontiac.  I could keep going and going and going.

There's nothing better for a vintage car / truck fan than Michigan in August.

You are probably wise to remain in the South as the weather up here can be quite unpredictable and sometimes downright cold. If however you feel the need to chill yourself to the bone I might suggest the museums around Auburn, Indiana or the Studebaker museum at South Bend, Indiana. If you do come up to Hoosier country let me clue you in that, North Vernon is south, South Bend is north and a French Lick isn't what it sounds like.

The United States Air Force museum in Dayton, Ohio, is a mind-boggling visit for anyone who likes history and aircraft. Just unbelievable. And if you're in the area, you can see the Packard Museum in Dayton. Then head north 4 hours drive to Detroit, and see the amazing Henry Ford Museum. Unparalleled automotive experience.

The best antique car museum in the south would be the one in northern Mississippi -- not far from Memphis -- the Tupelo Automobile Museum/140 cars /30,000 sq. m. building...

Image result for tupelo automobile museum     ....still photo and 7-minute video enclosed. There are a couple of museums in Missouri, too. The Auto World Museum in Fulton, the new  Evergreen Historic Automobile Museum in Lebanon, and the St. Louis car Museum(a sales place, but they seem to have 30-40 higher-end cars on their website[don't think that little '54 Corvette @ $80K will go in your plane's cargo bay too bleedin' well]). Looks like you will be getting here about.........now. Please have fun.

Simon, if you go to Charlotte as suggested it might be possible there are several race car museums there..all worth visiting.  NASCAR's big one, the NC Hall of Fame and you con go to Hendricks "gift shop" which is worth the visit to see the cars etc.

You won't find any Vegemite or Crownies here but I imagine you will run into a BBQ place or two in your itinerary.  BTW, Vegemite must be an acquired taste!  Love your country and your citizens...never been treated better.

I have some very good car-fanatic "mates" down under, who have visited the USA and stayed at my home in Ohio over the years...sometimes for several weeks at a time. Wonderful folks. But they brought us some "Vegemite" to sample....😖🤢🤮 Oh, MAN, that stuff is nasty!!!!!! And my mates down under actually put that stuff right in their MOUTHS! And they EAT IT! On PURPOSE!! No wonder they drive on the wrong side of the road!

All my life I've had a reputation as a non-picky eater. I thought I could happily anything that any other human being could happily eat. And then they gave me Vegemite! Whew! 🤮🤮🤮

Anyway, welcome to America again, Simon. Good on ya, Mate!

Lump, you should try Marmite from the UK and you would be even more convinced what makes people drive on the other side of the road

Holy smokes, Playswithbrass! There CAN'T be anything worse than Vegemite...is there???
