Guest
I've got a '65 Skylark with the 300 engine.
It's got a 4-barrel carb, which I always assumed was original but I am not so sure now. Here's why... the choke looks nothing like what is pictured in my '65 shop manual for 4-barrel carbs (and 2-barrel also).
Here's what it looks like. Looking straight at the carb, there is a circular metal device on the left side, at the near corner. It has three screws that loosen a clamp that allow you to turn it -- there are marks to aid in adjustment. It also has a couple wires attached to it, one goes straight to ground and the other one gets
juice somewhere.
My father says he's seen this sort of choke before (I'm 23, he's 53, he has a lot more experience with this stuff). Apparently it gets heated electrically. There's a spring inside the round metal that expands as the engine heats up, moving the choke as it gets warmer.
Mine is broken. I'm wondering where I can get a new one and I'm also curious where this choke could have come from (a later Buick?)
Thanks,
Carl
YellowLark
That choke is not original. However, if you were to buy a new replacement carb out of a catalog, the electric choke model (just like yours) would be the most popular choice.
------------------
Don Caithness
The original choke coil(black plastic cap) had a metal tube connected to the housing that ran down to the exhaust manifold. If you find an "real" parts store they might still be able to get you one but you'll have to repair/replace the preheat tube as it probably rusted off at the exhaust manifold.
------------------
Don Caithness
Technical Advisor
1967&1974 "A" Body
http://appraisals.webjump.com
collectorcarappraisalservices@attcanada.net
