Need Help! 1922 6-44 Buick roadster. I'll be at Hershey on friday.

Going to be at Hershey on Friday.

Need help with the following things!

 

My buick was used as a hay hauler in Vermont. I think it was a five passenger touring car or a 6-44 or 6-54 roadster. I need help dating it to see if it's a 1922 or 1923.

And i'm looking for the following parts or pichers of what they look like.

 

-Valve cover

-Door hinges and inner handle hardware

-Hand windshield wiper

-Knock off spare tire bracket for a 33-4 1/2 No.5 Buffalo wire wheel.

-Top and hardware for my roadster

-Spare distributor parts for touring, a good place to find water pump paking and the wick felt for the rockers

-Trunk hinges and handle with latch

 I think we have seen this on the forum before for sale. The ID plate on the firewall is needed to confirm as is the frame #. I believe the person was trying to make up a Sport roadster from parts and pieces. Come see us at C4M 44-45 at Hershey.

Your fenders and radiator shell look to be like what is on this 1922.

1923-54 Sport roadster. Fenders are different.

    Welcome,    That is a good looking car.  Lets figure out the year first.  Do you have the serial number on the frame, or the engine serial number?  Do you have any of the data tags from the firewall in the engine compartment.  I assume you are tell me that it is a 6 cylinder.  A photo of both sides of the motor would help.  

Myers Early Dodge sells water pump packing.  You should be able to find that at Hershey.

What is the wheelbase.  The 23-54 was on a 124 inch wb  and the 23-44 was on a 118 inch wb.  Both of these were the 6 cylinder.

The wheel base is 124 inches.

Frame number #833318.

Engine number #869534.

The body number on the firewall is missing.

This is a 1922, but the serial number breakdown I have does not go to the level of detail regarding what model this would correspond to, other than you telling me that it is a 6 cylinder.  This is likely not a chopped down 4 passenger touring car (model 45) but more likely a model 44.  It could be a model 54 given the Bufallo wheels.   If the sheetmetal does not fit up well, then it could be the front of a touring with the back of a roadster.  If the sheetmetal fits well, then it would be a model 44 or 54.

spare tire bracket - not sure  There is a guy selling some Bufallo wheels.  Good idea to locate a few spares.  He has 1922 6 cylinder parts(see below).

Top and Hardware  for roadster.  - Will be difficult to locate, but maybe can get dimensions to make.  

Spare distributor parts - Bob's Automobilia

trunk hinges and latch.  I would have to look this up.  Not sure if this has no outer latch and uses a T key.

 

Talk to Jerry, I think he may have some of the parts you are looking for.   Let him know I sent you.

I'm planing on going on a four month road trip in it. After Hershey I'm going to take it down too avery nut and bolt, to get it roadworthy and dependable. I'm thinking about painting it a nice wood green color with a lot of nickel work and the classic black fenders.

All the best with your car. It will be a spectacular car when finished.   Being on the 124 inch chassis/frame,  it is the  Model 22-54  Sport Roadster.  .  It was introduced in January  1922.  Your car was advertised on craigslist back in January 2017.  It shows the door hinges in this photo.

It's not a true 22-6-54 or 22-6-44.

The guy who had the car bought the buffalo wire wheels to replace the stock 32x4 wood spoke wheels.

The roadster body is off of a 22-6-23, so i'm having trouble on what to do to line up the doors that he had or if they are the right length doors for the 124 inch wheelbase in the first place.

     The 1922 6 cylinder model 44 was on the 118" frame, and the model 54 was on the 124" frame.   Sounds like the front would be a 1922 Model 54.  There is no model 23.  Since the back has a trunk, and assuming it is 1922, it is either a model 34 roadster, or a model 36 coupe, or model 48 coupe, or model 44 roadster or 54 sport roadster.

 The 1922, 124" WB had 6 different bodies that could have been mounted on them. As said earlier this car was for sale on craigslist and also on the forum I believe. If I look back the previous owner may have contacted me because I had been interested. Friends told me to stay away because it was a compilation of pieces and parts. I had known of 2, 1922-54s and 5, 1923-54s. I have also offered on 3, 1923-55 Sport Touring cars. So I have some information /photos if needed.

 I went to buy this one in 2011 as a running /driving car. When we went to pick it up it was neither.

Thanks, I could use all the measurements I can get my hands on because nothing's lining up and the hardware is mostly Phillips screws, Metric bolts and Pine two-by-fours with spray foam holding the body together, so I got too rip all that out.

I'm going to start from scratch anyway. 

What color did the 54s come in, just red with a red leather interior or did they have other color choices?

All of the 22-54 models came Deep Maroon color.  If you wanted a Blue car, you bought another model.  That is one of the unique things about the time period.   I would also think that they came Deep Maroon outside and use the spanish leather.

 The Models 54 and 55 came only in the deep maroon. I love the color The factory ad posted above  is how they came. Lots of special nickeled hardware. The windshield  stanchions had bosses for the wind wing attachment.  Note covered visor. Special steering wheel with walnut rim and spokes. Of course the Spanish grain leather upholstery and dash.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that the cal, splash pans, Hood, front fenders and radeater are original to the running gear.

So it was either a roadster or touring car.
