70sWagoneers
1937 Buick Special 40 My transmission leaks like a sieve and I would like to replace the gaskets while Ive got the rear end out. Ive got the kit from Bob's Automobilia. Can anyone advise me on how many gaskets there are to replace and if I'll run into any common issues or troubles while I'm in there. Spinneyhill
Not just gaskets leak. Look at all the bolts with one end in the oil and one end in the air. Oil comes up the threads. Look at the lay shaft ends. Any leakage through there? And the rear seal? You might find the rear bearing is sloppy, which results in the seal failing. The front bearing might not be too flash either. The rear seal surface on the output shaft may also be worn and pitted. Are you sure it is gearbox oil? Does the engine leak much oil? If it were mine, I would roll under there and clean it up now. After a drive I would roll under again and see where it is leaking. Clean and repeat. Then I could form a proper action plan and obtain the appropriate parts and ask the appropriate questions.
