Metal Stitching or Metal Locking, is a mechanical cold cast iron repair process that’s been in use for over 80 years. This is a cold process that can be used without interrupting the Integrity of the iron and can be done in a timely fashion often times without removal of other equipment or parts. Metal Stitching can be done on either small engine blocks or huge multi-ton presses basically anything that’s made out of cast iron can and should be metal stitched instead of welded or brazed. I have attached photos with examples of past metal stitching projects. The Metal Stitching process undertaken by us is a precise mechanical method of making permanent repair of broken castings and machine parts. We ensure that no post-repair machining is required to correct misalignment and warp age as we don't use heat, which leads to stresses. Further there is no heat, metal locking repairs can be provided in restricted areas where flames or welding arc is prohibited. So, the repair can be carried out at your site, without the necessity of major disassembly.

 

Understanding Cast Iron

 

Cast iron only cracks when it is stressed beyond its tensile strength. This includes all heat related cracks, freeze cracks, impact and bending loads. Cast iron will not weaken over time. However It will change if exposed to high temperatures over long periods of time like exhaust manifolds and wood burning stoves. The process is called graphitization. The carbon is changed to graphite and any type of welding that requires melting the cast iron becomes very difficult because the filler metal will not bond properly. Brazing is also not effective because the iron is not melted during the process.
