tyler searle 18
Finally getting ready to install the rebuilt 248 in my '38 Special. How do you determine what is needed for shims on the torque tube? I can't seem to find that in the Manuel. Any other tips/ hints anyone can share on this procedure or anything to watch for? Really want to get this in right. Thanks . DonMicheletti 686
There are no shims between the transmission and torque tube flange, if that is what you mean. There are shims for the crossmember fot the transmission mount and between the rear motor mount and engine, if needed. Both of those are expalined in the manual I believe. tyler searle 18
Maybe I should have said "torque ball" I got a torque ball shim kit and new type of seal.
DonMicheletti 686
OK, That shimming is also explained in the manual, but I have always found it difficult to judge when it is correct. Fortunately neither of my two '38's leak at the torque ball.
tyler searle 18
Thanks, Don. I guess you shim until things are snug.
DonMicheletti 686
Yes, that is what i did. To get a feel for the amount of 'preload' i put a piece of pipe in the U joint, moved it around, and shimmed until I felt it was good enough - pretty touchy feely. I have no leaks and all seems OK.
