Wanted! 1942 Buick Century 2 door Sedanette

Recommended Posts

Good luck, Larry! I don't think I've ever seen one in the flesh. I don't have my book, but I thin production was like 270 before production ended. If you do find one, it will be the Holy Grail of Centurys! Hope you turn one up because it would be fantastic just to see it.

Lawrence, are you sure you want a 1942 exclusively?

Is it just because they have a few extra trim strips?

People who lived back when cars were new had more

insights than collectors today.  Was a 1915 Scripps-Booth any good?

What were the weak points of the Alpena car?

People today probably don't remember, but Buick's 1942 cars

were known to be oil leakers.  In addition, noted reviewer

Tom McCahill wrote  [Mechanix Illustrated, February 1966]:

"The 1942 Buicks left much to be desired and when they

were reintroduced after the war they were practically

carbon copies of the prewar oil-burning jobs--but well deloused.

The '42 cars had more bugs than a Chinese flophouse

in springtime."

Here's a helpful idea:  If you like that body style

AND the extra lower-body trim strips, you might

like a 1946-48 Buick Special coupe as well.

In those years, only the Specials kept the lower trim

that the 1942 models had.  They might be easier

to find, and surely just as enjoyable to drive.

Thanks John but honestly after having owned my share of prewar and early postwar cars I bought a 41 Century 66S because I was tired of driving 55 miles an hour as I had done in my youth going coast to coast several times. Spinning a main bearing in Rock Springs WY. made it clear 55 was it for most pre automatic cars. The Buick Special or Super is a 55 mile an hour car though it will go much faster the gearing has it spinning quiet fast. Buick unfortunately did not feel a need for overdrives. The Roadmaster and Century are geared for higher speed cruising and top gear is good from 20 to 100 mph . The engine is such a torque monster its almost like having an automatic and except for steep hill starting from 2nd gear is the norm. The 41 and 42 320 motor made 165 hp and a postwar special 248 motor with just one carb and lower compression and just as heavy is even slower then the prewar dual carb special. Century's rule!
