Grizz 9 Posted March 30, 2018 I’m trying to decide on power brakes or not for my 54 chieftain. Here’s the issues. I have a standard master cylinder and brake pedal already clean and mounted on the frame. I can only find the bottom half of the pedal plates though. I have a complete pedal plate for a power brake setup. The difference is the power brake pedal plate is one piece and had a spot to mount the booster. Also the pedal is moved from mounting on the frame to mounting inside on the steering column. I have a booster but it’s pretty crusty. Does anyone have any experience rebuilding these and know where to find parts? Or....anyone have some standard pedal plates for sale? Here’s some pics. Of the plates, (I been cleaning the one for power brakes. What should I paint it with?) and booster.
pontiac1953 71 Posted March 30, 2018 hi, midwestblooster.com is an excellent rebuilder and restorer of the treadle vac power brake master cylinder/vacuum blooster you have. i changed my 1953 pontiac from standard brakes to power brakes many years ago. charles l. coker 1953 pontiac tech advisor tech advisor coordinator pontiac oakland club int'l. pontiac1953 71 Posted March 30, 2018 finding a standard brake floor access plate should be easy, same plate used for 1953 & 1954 pontiacs with standard brakes. i would paint the floor plate with a rust proofing paint.
pontiac1953 71 Posted March 30, 2018 along with the treadle vac, do you have the vacuum resevior cannister, firewall vacuum line, check valve, and manifold tee fitting ?
Grizz 9 Posted April 2, 2018 I know I saw the reservoir in there and I think I have a check valve. Is this it?I don’t have vacuum line or the tee fitting. (That I know of) I’m painting the pedal plate for power brakes. Is that the only piece that goes on the floor?. It fits snug on the bottom but is raised quite a bit at the top. I have installed the steering column, painting the plate tonight and will bolt it up tomorrow. Your help is greatly appreciated
pontiac1953 71 Posted April 11, 2018 what you're holding is a fuel pressure regulator, has nothing to do with your treadle vac power brake system.
Grizz 9 Posted April 15, 2018 Ta-da! Look what I found! Same box as the vacuum reservoir(I think). And pedal boot? Still haven’t found a check valve so I’ll be painting up the standard pedal plates and using them, until I rebuild the booster later on down the road. Also found the brake line. Going to start on that. What kind of brackety is needed along the frame going towards the back here?
pontiac1953 71 Posted April 22, 2018 the rubber bellow boot isn't brake related, it's for the control rod where it goes through the rear top of the left front inner fender panel for controlling the air flow for both the defroster and the underseat heater.
