John_Mc
The transmission end of my speedo cable needs repair, any specific recommendations? Thank you in advance.
JFranklin
It probably depends on what is wrong with it.
John_Mc
The trans end nut has broken free of the cable
JFranklin
Can it maybe soldered? I would also keep an eye on Ebay for a replacement
John_Mc
No, the solder would never take the strain, BUT, I think I could try a large flat speed nut secured inside the nut just might do the trick.. Thank you for responding.
JFranklin
You think solder wouldn't take the strain but maybe that is your initial problem. The speedometer should turn freely with very little resistance. A good tin solder should hold up ok if everything else is free.
John_Mc
I should explain with more detail. The cable does spin beautifully with no drag. My issue is the the collar on the outside of the cable sheathing that mates with the transmission is missing, in other words the nut that secures the cable to the transmission has nothing to grab and put a secure hold hold the cable. JFranklin
Try the fix you suggested. I see the problem now.It is the sheath and not the cable. Keep an eye out for a replacement, many swap meets will be starting up soon. Maybe the missing part was used on other makes or model years. 38ShortopConv.
An old fashion speedo repair shop should have them, they crimp on. Had a complete speedo cable made up about a year ago for the Columbia, about 10 feet long, it had two of those fittings on the outer sheath, one at each end. John_Mc
Happy to write that while up in Minneapolis on Friday, I looked online and located a great guy who fixed me up in about an hour. I HIGHLY recommend him for any and all speedometer and gauge related repair. Very reasonable and super efficient!!!
