chevybach Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 Hey I get a question my buddy gave me a nice wells cargo trailer but no title. The problem is that the trailer was given to him from a friend that he ended up getting a bigger trailer so he just gave it to my buddy but never gave hin the title and since he can't drive he gave it to me since I been looking for one for a while. So is there a way that I can gets plates for it. I'm half tempted on walking into a DMV and ask them is there anything I can do.
Matt Harwood Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 How big is the trailer? In many states, trailers under a certain weight do not require titles. For instance, my enclosed aluminum trailer is under 4000 pounds and did not require a title, just a bill of sale. But yes, ask the DMV, they're the only ones who really know the answer.
chevybach Posted February 17, 2018 Author Posted February 17, 2018 (edited) I think it's 6x12 one axel Edited February 17, 2018 by chevybach (see edit history)
victorialynn2 Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 Yes, contact the DMV of your state. Many do not require titles for trailers of that size, but DMV can tell you for sure.
Larry Schramm Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 I think it is the same for Mich, but I always get a title. It makes selling the trailer easier. I agree with going to the DMV and secure a title.
Rusty_OToole Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 You may have to contact the last registered owner. If you can't get the title you may need to get a letter or affidavit proving it was given to you and not stolen.
mercer09 Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 you can go online and register through Maine and they send you reg and tags for a fee. you should mention what state you are in...............
Paul Dobbin Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 if it has a serial #, you'll probably have to title it. In NC they even assigned me a serial # for a home made trailer so I could title it, then Tax it. Each state makes up thier own rules. $*%*@! 1
Restorer32 Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 You cannot title a vehicle in Maine that does not already have a title. At least that is what they told me. .
