Can anyone answer the following question: Are Buick small block heads prone to cracking? I've gone through two heads already, and I have yet to overheat the car Has anyone else experienced this?

I have never heard anyone complain about cracking Buick heads before. I overheated my 71 Riviera 455 about two years ago and after fixing the coolant leak it was fine.

Make sure you are tightening the head bolts in three steps. For instance if the spec calls for torquing them to 100 ft-lbs. first tighten them all to 33 ft-lbs, then 66 ft-lbs and then 100 ft-lbs. Each time follow the prescribed tightening order. After the car has been run through a couple hot and cold cycles try retightening the bolts again.

Use new bolts and make sure the bolt holes are clean and free of oil. This will prevent false torque readings. Finally make sure you have a good torque wrench. The "clicker" type need to be recalibrated every few years.

I hope this helps
