-morten- Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 Hi, i need to take off front wheel brakedrum on my 1940 Super. Grind off rivets or take out bearing? Take care. -morten-
Daves1940Buick56S Posted January 7, 2018 Posted January 7, 2018 Rivets? Not sure about those... Here is what I do: 1. Jack up car, remove tire and wheel 2. Using a screwdriver, pry the center dust cap off 3. Remove cotter pin from the large nut 4. Remove the nut and washer. I seem to recall it is left hand threads on one side and right hand threads on the other 5. Wiggle the drum until the outer bearing with the balls pops out a little, then remove. 6. Remove the outer bearing inner race as well 7. Remove drum If the drum is loose but it feels like something is holding it on, you may have to retract the brake shoes with a brake spoon. Spoon down to retract. Cheers, Dave 3
-morten- Posted January 7, 2018 Author Posted January 7, 2018 thanks :-) (the rivets are placed at the same place as the bolts that hold the rear brake drum in place)
Morgan Wright Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 The dust cap is actually the hub cap. What we normally call hub caps are not hub caps at all. --Webster
packick Posted January 19, 2018 Posted January 19, 2018 I would add a step 4.5 to Dave's procedure. I usually loosen the shoes about 10 or so clicks before I try to remove the drum. Just makes it easier.
Gary W Posted February 2, 2018 Posted February 2, 2018 Here's how to do it on a '37. I assume it's a similar task: Just click the arrow in the upper right corner 1
