Zimm63 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 Looking to replace the steering column in my 63. I understand the 65s are different in how the lower end is set up. Can anyone provide a picture or description of the differences?
gord14080 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 I would like to see photo of a 65 steering column where it meets the flex coupler, thanks in advance! Gordon Purves.
DualQuadDave Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I have 64 and 65 columns, will try to get pics up this weekend. What is wrong with your 63 column?
Zimm63 Posted January 4, 2018 Author Posted January 4, 2018 (edited) Stiff/malfunctioning switch, broken cable, broken actuator lever, bad chrome. Edited January 4, 2018 by Zimm63 (see edit history)
telriv Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I installed a '63 tilt column in my '64 that originally came from the factory with a standard column. Don't remember running into any problems.
gord14080 Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I don’t have anything to keep the shaft centered ,seems I am missing something, some sort of bearing? yes I have manuals, but cannot find good description.
telriv Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 The tilt columns don't have a bearing/sleeve at the end. The shaft just "Floats" in there. I made a bearing/sleeve from a piece of Delron ( a sort of slippery plastic) & held it in place with a couple self tapping screws. Also keeps the heat from coming up the column.
pyntre Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I actually sent my original 65 column to Ididit a few years back and they used it to make a direct replacement ,,, the new column fits like a glove , although it lacks the chrome lower shielding the original had ... I would think they would have taken measurements for their inventory of columns ,,, maybe ????
gord14080 Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Telriv, that was my concern, yes I think I shall do something to close that tube like you did . thanks for the reply, I thought I may have lost.something from the bottom of the column. Thanks again,Gordon Purves.
