Looking for things to do after work..

I may be in Steven Point Wisconsin and San Luis Obispo Ca.

Any great car guys to see or car museums?

Or just a great place to eat..

The Peterson Auto Museum on Wilshire Blvd. at Fairfax, near the La Brea tar pits is really worth a visit, but it's 3 hours from San Luis.

If you can squeeze it in, you'll enjoy it.

Make sure to see Hearst Castle in San Simion, California.

Second that recommendation. Saw it about dusk , a group of local theater players, in period costume, provided  some additional "color" to the guided tour I was on.

In San Luis Obispo, make sure you attend the Farmers Market. Don't know which day it's on (used to be Thursdays) but worth attending. Good prices and if it's strawberry season you have to buy a flat. Absolutely delicious.  While there, make sure you get some original Santa Maria-style BBQ. Beef ribs or Tri-tip. Also try the unique pinquito beans.

When visiting SLO, I always stop at British Car Repair at 640 Marsh St. They have several British cars for sale and I also like to peek into the repair area to see what interesting cars they are working on.

Walk around downtown SLO. It's a very relaxing experience.

I know of this as "Santa Maria Steak".  It is marinated tri-tip roast that is grilled, not BBQ like you get in Texas.

And it is not to be missed.

It looks like Oxnard CA is less than 2.5 hours away, they have two museums there, the Murphy and the Mullin, you can Google both for hours and details.

I went to the Murphy, it is modest size but interesting and is open Saturday and Sunday Jan-March.

I missed the Mullin--much to my regret--as it was not open the Saturday I was there; they are only open specific days and times.  But they are said to be one of the top ten car museums in the country and specialize in rare French cars not normally seen in the States.

Only another 45 minutes from there on the far north edge of the Los Angeles area is the Nethercutt Museum in Slymar CA www.nethercuttcollection.org .  This one is absolutely one of the best anywhere, probably THE best for prewar coachbuilt Classics and spectacular, more than worth the drive. If you get two days and could go there and the Petersen that would be a great car-guy trip, good luck and hope you enjoy, Todd C

As I remember the Nethercutt needs a reservation to go into the main building to see the Duesenberg's, it was really great! Same with Hearst Castle, you just can not fathom that kind of money

When you're in SLO, take a short ride to Pismo Beach.  There you will find a small hole-in-the-wall place called the Splash Cafe.  It's right next to the pier.   Order the clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.  I've driven 3 hours for one of these!   Go at an off-hour...the line can wrap around the building sometimes.   You will sing praise to me when you're done :)

I live 17 miles from Stevens Point.

I can think of only one large collection IN Point and have a friend who could MAYBE arrange a visit.

When might you be in the area and for how long?

As for eating there is no shortage of great places to eat!

John did in response #8 above. But it should be further clarified that reservations for the other building can simply be made as you enter here. Go early. Look at these few of the many cars which will keep you busy before and after your guided tour (therefore reservations). The tour will also show and demonstrate an exquisite collection of mechanical instruments , including , a string quartet ! I seem to recall that you are free to roam the cars after the tour , but certainly you can come and go freely to the first venue. Now we haven't heard a peep back from Jake , Nick 8086 , so I have no idea whether the trip is on , or if enough free time will permit a visit to the  not quite next door L.A. area. I do agree that with only one entire free day , the relatively near Hearst Castle should be the prime destination. Again , the several tours available (take at least 3 - well worth the cost) , can be scheduled upon arrival. This is not high tourist season in the area. Hey Real Steel : what about Jocko's for strapping on a feed bag ?    - Carl

Thanks for those pics Carl.

I have been there and cant say enough.

A HUGE bonus are the music boxes at the end of the tour.

I could spend hours looking at the collection of mascots as well.

Thanks Carl:

Now we haven't heard a peep back from Jake , Nick 8086 , so I have no idea whether the trip is on ,  Still here..

I do not have any dates yet.. I just look at the work to do and pick what state.. I may get it or not..

He is our 1941 car.. I think it had only 4000 miles on it..

Since I grew up with a car collector . I had a chance  to see a lot of stuff over the years..

Looking at a lot of cars does not do a lot for me.. Talking to the guy about the cars does.. The story about it..

Jake..

Just saw The Nethercutt Collection in October, cannot recommend it highly enough. I’m the car guy in our group, but the others in tow were over the moon about the experience. The tour guide who is also the music machine mechanic really makes it great.

How about Hermann, Missouri ?? Will be in town two days..

Take a look at www.transportmuseumassociation.org in suburban St Louis, about a 1.5 hour drive from Hermann.  They are not as well known as they should be as they have a small but significant car collection including a Chrysler Turbine car (!) and if you like trains it is even better.  Closed Monday and Tuesday this time of year, hope you can see it, Todd C
