1929 Hupmobile Century M

I have bought my dad's 1929 Hupmobile that he bought way back in 1968.  I was just a little tike when he brought it home.  It was all apart and needed restored, which was done over the next few years.  I can remember handing him tools and watching as he worked on it.  We went to many car shows and drove it a lot for several years, then other cars came along and the Hupp got relegated to storage, dad saying the car wasn't safe to be on the road with the newer cars.  It was driven a few times in the late 90's and then put away again.  He decided last year to sell all his cars and I told him that I wanted the Hupp as it had so many memories. 

So I now own it and I would like to do a few things to it to make it look a little better.  Mechanical work(cleaning fuel tank, changing oil, etc) will have to wait till I can get it out of his building in the spring.  Some of the things I would like to do is get some new carpet in it, not factory, but something that looks nice.  In looking at it I have found that the door thresholds were never installed and I would like to know how they fit.  If someone has some detailed pictures I would appreciate it.  I also would like to get the correct taillight for the car.  I think I have enough hubcaps, but a few spares would be nice...  One other thing for right now would be the switches on the steering wheel are incorrect and would be nice to have the right ones.

I want to keep it like I remember the car, but I also want to make it mine.

I believe your best source for parts & information is to join the Hupmobile Club.  The membership cost is $31.00 a year.  The “Parts Locator” is distributed 6 times a year.    The “Hupp Harold” magazine is published quarterly along with a membership roster.  Additionally, a “Technical Advisor” who coordinates information on your M is available.

 

The club members get together yearly for a tour where we excercise the cars & waste gas having fun.  The 2018 tour is June 4th - 7th in Staunton, VA.  Usually about half bring a car, in 2017 a couple flew in from Australia.  The tour cars are all ranges of condition from unrestored to just finished.

Been working on replacing the carpet in the Hupp.  Here are a few pictures to tell the story.  I know it is not the correct material but neither is the upholstery.  I bought this carpet material many years ago at Hershey and have finally had a use for it.

I have the thresholds to install, I cleaned them up some and they look pretty good.  I think they were originally installed with nails on the top and bottom, right?  How do you put the nails in on the bottom??

The Hupmobile is now at my garage and it moves under its own power.  I just filled the vacuum canister with fuel, none in the tank yet.  The carburetor leaks out of what looks like the bottom of the bowl.  Huppy  day!

This looks like a very solid car.  None of the incorrect parts are hard to amend.  The light switch, spark advance and throttle levers at the steering wheel center and the horn buttonhole been or are in the process of being reproduced.  Join the Hupp Club and advertise your needs to encourage more report. projects of the necessary parts.  The door sill trim is installed with escutcheon pins on top as you already know.  Flat headed body nails are used on the underside and can only be installed with the body raised from the frame.

If your carb is leaking and is the pot metal unit , there may be cracks in the float bowl.  The source of leaks in the bronze units usually is from the needle valve sticking open or the float sticking.  This could also be true for the pot metal units and for either one requires removal for a thorough cleaning and inspection.

I have a lead on a taillight for the Hupp, but it has a red light in the center instead of the clear lens.  It does have two bulbs in the light though.  My car has reverse lights.  Is that light correct?  I would think I could interchange the red bullet lens with a clear one if I could find it.

I see a good original woodgrain in the car, which I would advice keeping. I have a woodgrain business( Woodgrain by Estes ) and would be glad to offer advice on it’s preservation.

I have been doing a little changes to the Hupp over the last few months.  Hershey 2018 I bought some stainless wire covers for the exposed wires on the lights and decided that it was time to put them on.  Minor cosmetic enhancements from rubber hoses.
