Window tinting to simulate OEM tinted glass?

Does anyone know if a window tint film exists that simulates the greenish blue tint of the original Soft-Ray tinted glass?

My '65 came with a tinted windshield only.  The rest of the windows are not tinted.  My car is dark green with dark green interior.  I thought it would look good if the side and back windows were mildly tinted the original light greenish tint of the OEM Soft-Ray glass.   Plus this would help keep the car cooler during hot summer days.  However, most window tints I've seen are quite dark, of a blackish/gray shade.

Has anyone found a tint film that is greenish/blue, like the OEM tinted glass?

Hi, I have worked on several 63-65 Riv's and one of my customer's put clear tint on his Riv. It had factory tinted glass, so I am pretty sure it did not change the color, per say, but did cut a lot of heat out of the interior.  If you want to swap your car to factory tinted glass, I have a complete set-fronts, quarters, rear- that I would sell.  Let me know if you are interested and we'll talk. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

OK Verde: I have a dark green 65.  Standard white interior  with originally a tinted windshield only.  I actually did the swap out. It was a pain in the ass to say the least. I have  R & R'd lots of rear 1/4 windows and  STILL can't get it right. haha. Several things to keep in mind if one does a swap.

1. Be prepared for a holy surprise when the front and back glass comes out because GMs with this window chrome trim may look clean but be riddled with rust holes beyond one's imagination.

2. If you're gonna replace with tint and it's a nice car make sure the glass is not scratched up, the rollers work nicely, the tracks  clean and greased and the window motors working nicely with clean connections and happy switches.

3. These parts should be rather  inexpensive because  there have been many First-Genz parted and it's not a big selling item.

If there is a really easy and cheep tint that would do the trick and not be noticeable...please share.       Mitch

Hi Dave,

How much would you be asking for a set of factory tinted vent window, door, rear quarter, and back glass?  That would be for a total of 7 pieces.

Are all the pieces from the same donor car?  What date codes are on the glass?  This is two letters (e.g. YJ), denoting the year and month made.

Where are you located?  Glass is heavy, so shipping might be considerable?

Thanks,

Hi Alex, I am in South Florida.  Shipping the side glass is no problem, shipping the rear glass will get interesting.   My glass is all from 64/65 Riv's, I can get some date codes for you if you want.  Just to confirm, check and make sure your door glass is bolt-in, not glue-in.  Every 65 I have ever seen was factory bolt-in, however, stuff happens over the years and some cheap-o mechanic may have put a 63-early 64 glue-in glass & track in your car.  I have taken apart enough Riv's to see some with both on the same car.  I will get a price for the whole set and PM you.  We'll work on shipping and see if we can come up with a solution that is not crazy $$.

I would also like to know if there is a  green window tint that has the correct OEM look or if they are too dark or too green. Thanks.

Hi Peter,

I never found a source for window tint film that would simulate the blue/green tint of the original Soft-Ray glass.

I wound up locating a full set of tinted glass locally which was used to replace the non-tinted glass in my car.  I bought a new windshield from Summit, and took the car to a glass shop to do the windshield install and glass swap.  This went reasonably well.  The door glass was easy, as was the rear backlight.  The vent windows had to be smashed out of their frames and then the new glass went in with setting tape.

The rear quarter windows were a bitch!  Before taking the car into the glass shop I stripped out the back seat and inside armrest panels to provide access to the quarter window assemblies.  But, as anyone who has fiddled with these, access is difficult and getting the tracks adjusted so the glass slides up and down properly is nearly impossible.  The shop tried their best but grew frustrated and I agreed to accept the job as it was the best they said they could do.  The quarter windows struggle to go up and down smoothly.  So I just leave them alone and try not to worry about it!  The shop charged me about $450 for the glass swap, which considering the amount of work involved was very fair, IMO.

I've used window tint on one of my Rivs and can't remember the source. The color was called "spearmint" and it was very close to the original hue
