I think just having one lonely can up there on a purpose-built shelf is hysterical.

Build it, they will come 😆

Lamar,

Looking great.

Thanks Larry!

No work for a few days, letting my body rest. Looks like two maybe three days in a row takes it's toll on the DDD requiring about the same time to recuperate. if anyone else has degenerative disc disease and care to share your experiences I'd love to hear from your through a PM maybe.

Today’s progress. Another no show day of my helper even after committing to Wed, Thursday and Friday. I just don’t get today’s generation work ethics.

Will be moving stacks of lumber and the '38 tomorrow and starting on the west wall Friday hopefully. Going to the other side of Atlanta Saturday to look at and hopefully purchase upper wall cabinets. look for some good sales at Buick Gardens Pick Your Own, LOL.

Looking good. What is the purpose of the felt behind the wood??

again, makes for a great big blackboard. 😆 This time to do the layout of my base and wall cabinets.
Scored some all wood cabinets with bead board doors to match other Beadboard through out the build. 97E36D6C-133A-4A88-B90A-17CC52C94BD2.jpeg.d757af06385f20a68bcf9392996d191e.jpeg

Thanks Gary. I had some  60’s built knotty pine ones I had salvaged from a house but they were 36 to 40” tall so were too tall, would have gotten into the windows. While these have beadboard panels in the doors vs the real thing I think they will do and will save a heck of a lot work in retrofitting the 60’s one and building doors for them out of real Beadboard. These are all real wood, not pressboard

Starting to get low on the nicer looking and straight 2x6’s so went ahead and used them on areas that will or might be exposed, as in everything not covered by cabinets. I am on the fence about how

much along this wall to leave exposed and how much to cover with corrugated metal. It should be easier to decide once the cabinets are in.

  • 2 weeks later...

Time to start dealing with the old lab cabinets. After looking into several brush on enamels vs rattle can spray I decided on Duplicolor Ford Green @ $7.99 a can as it is a very close match to the Hirsch Buick Engine Green @$20 can, I used on the old Mac tool box years ago. I also like the adjustable spray tip that puts out a flatter wider spray.
I plan on scrubbing them down good with a combination of Zep Industrial and BKF using Scotch Brite pads and rinsing then light sanding and rinsing, rinsing, rinsing. Keeping in mind these are shop cabinets, not nice toolboxes and file cabinets like I’ve painted with BEG before.

I hate sanding and I wouldn't want to do those. I really enjoy following you and your projects.

Whoever did the last paint job on these did one crappy job. Lots of runs  and something that looks like bad orange peel but worse. So yea Gary, I’m deeper into the painting of these cabinets than I had planned. Rolled out a 30 x60 tarp to shed the Zep and BKF contaminated water off the ground of the twin oak behind the garage. Each cabinet is averaging a day to thoroughly wash down, sand with 220 to get through the pimples then 330 to loose the sanding marks. Then another wash to remove any sanding dust. I’ll spot prime as some bare metal has been exposed.

So much for the old scotch brite pads.  Isn’t that the way it always goes?  Next thing you know, you’ll be taking off that old paint because it’s not bonded very well.  Then, two months later and many hours sweating, they’ll look great.

My shoulders ache just looking at that pile of cabinets. I would've just hosed them off and painted them with a roller...

You're a far better man than I, Lamar.

Never happen, I'm done with prep and just hoping this thin rattle can paint goes on well with not too many runs.

Ben, I’m afraid I’m out of commission for a spell.  I had heart attack on Thursday evening and by midnight I had a stent in a main artery that was 99% blocked!  I got a few restrictions that should all end in a few days.  I’ve been trying to build a small car/equipment shed and my body finally came to a stop on Thursday afternoon and then violently rebelled a few hours later.

I feel lucky but I also feel great right now.  But, not great enough to go sand cabinets!

Oh, wow, Joel.   Glad to hear you came through. And with only a stent!  My chest had to be cracked open seven years ago.  FOLLOW DOCTOR's ORDERS.

Thank God for the miracles of modern medicine. Glad you're OK and feeling "great" now Joel. I know it had to be scary for you and your family. Did the doc put you on a diet?

Thanks folks, I have a wife and 15 year old boy and there for a little while they were just about all I could think about.

It’s nothing short of miraculous that a well trained cardiologist could completely fix this in 15 mins.  Fortunately I have very little residual damage.

About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes.  In short order I lost 60 lbs and have lost more since.  I’ve been doing well diet wise but I did something i now regret.  After my cholesterol numbers fell way down I stopped taking the drug.  Turns out the cholesterol went back up and the resulting plaque nearly got me.  I’m back on the drug, and now others, for the long haul.

Thanks again,

Joel
