Sartana Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 The speedo cable on my '37 Chrysler Airflow died. Short of finding a NOS one or one specifically for that application, is there any trick to getting a generic after market unit? Are the fittings something esoteric or are they basically all the same and all I really need to focus on is the overall length? Any recommendations on a good shop I can contact and order from? Thanks!
Guest Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 (edited) Further down, on the Chrysler forum you might get more information quicker. The cable (the inner part) was almost universal from the mid 30's up into the early 70's. The only variations were the ends and they were swaged on. A .58 second Google search turned up hundreds of sources. Three that I have personally dealt with are below. http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/store/speedometer-cable-69-inch-1 http://www.oldmoparts.com/ http://www.vintagepartsource.com/chryslerparts.htm Remember only lubricate the lower third of the cable. Spinneyhill Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 (edited) "died" = ? How about a more technical description? Has it broken the cable? Is it stuck? If it is anything like the 1930 Dodge speedo, it will have a pot metal body. The zinc in the metal corrodes and it all swells, resulting in the body clamping down on the drive shaft in the speedo, causing a broken cable. You might get some fluctuations before that happens.
