Joe in Canada Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 (edited) Here is a classic example on why I quit PAYBAY two year ago. The item sold for $25. and PAYBAYS Global Shipping Service would charge me $16. 08 shipping. They then charge you tax + a brokerage fee ( a second handling fee in reality ) but they do not give you the cost until after you buy it total $24.32 By then the total cost of shipping almost doubles the total price $49.32. It could have gone in a regular envelope for a couple of $ I would think. That is what happens when you hire a middle man with the cost dubbing. With the extra costs savings by the end of the year not using PAYBAY it pays for my gas to go to Hershey and make it an adventure. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-1910s-Ford-Motor-Company-Brass-Automobile-Name-Plate-No-Serial-Number-/332447641966?hash=item4d676c716e%3Ag%3A5s0AAOSwDFBaCQID&vxp=mtr&nma=true&si=%2FwtzKNA%2FqK47PUSUasg9UecXiJw%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Edited November 29, 2017 by Joe in Canada (see edit history)
mercer09 Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 because you are in Canada yes. But Im in the US and figure the exact opposite. Have never found so many rare parts and items as on ebay....................... like the TWO Duesenberg titles I bought a few years back! 1
Spinneyhill Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 (edited) I agree with Joe. eBay shipping cost to NZ is preposterous. If I buy direct from a vendor, the shipping is usually half as much. For anything other than old car stuff, ebay is not relevant to me. Aliexpress.com is often better although their prices have jumped recently too. Amazon shipping charges are equally preposterous. Joe in Canada Posted November 29, 2017 Author Posted November 29, 2017 (edited) The problem is if the vender selects EBay's middle man shipping when they list. EBay will not let them change to the USPS as Spinney says is half the cost. If in the US the cost is $6. for shipping verses $49.32 to Canada. That is 722 % more in shipping!!!!!!! 1937hd45 Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 If you are outside the USA take the time to ask the seller to uncheck the Global Shipping and do a man to man sale, I've been happy to do that many times for buyers in Australia and New Zealand. Bob 2
auburnseeker Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I never opted into the Global Shipping scam. You have to be very careful trying to take deals off ebay. They are really clamping down on that. So much that they are actually hindering on ebay transactions. If any question the program picks up and falls in the Suspicious wording, then they will block your message account. Really hard to answer questions that way on items getting ready to end. I guess enough and they suspend your selling account. No judge or trial, you are eliminated without being able to defend yourself. 1

Just trying to help a guy out in Australia. What I would suggest is offer local pick-up also, and them make your arrangement as "a friend of the buyer is picking up the part" Ebay has become the mafia they want a ta$te of everything. greenie Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 As a long time Hershey vendor, and eBay seller, I have always appreciated my customers from Canada- they constitute a large segment of my buyers of early Chevy truck parts. I try to give them a nice discount recognizing their travel expenses and the currency exchange rate. As far as eBay sales, sometimes they have a friend south of the border; but asking for a direct shipment apart from the eBay international service is a good idea.
1937hd45 Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Just how does one outside the USA look at eBay auctions? Do you take the time to ask questions about postage before you bid? Australians, New Zealanders and Germans don't have a problem asking. Bob

Bob EBay does not give the full cost of shipping out of the US until after the auction is over. The more you spend the more it will cost I assume. Australians, New Zealanders and Germans don't have a problem asking but they will not get a full answer I would think. You sound like an EBayer go to any item hit shipping put in Canada see what your cost will be and after you get the full cost let be know.
4Hud Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Ebay has done well to exclude anyone outside of the US from making purchases with their global shipping program, it may still work out with larger items, in the past I bought large amounts of period vintage vehicle photographs mailed in an envelope for a couple of dollars, now it is at least $9.99-16.99. Not anywhere near cost effective, so zero purchases now.
John348 Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 I sell a lot of antique toys on ebay. I have to say the global shipping program does not seem to stop people. About 1/3 of my sales are shipped via global shiping
mercer09 Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 John, I attribute that to the weaker dollar over the years. Same can be said about Hershey, a good 20% of the folks milling the grounds seem to be foreign. When I was in Europe 30 years ago, everyone clambered for greenbacks. Was in Poland 2 years ago and went to pay my bar bill the night before leaving................ asked the gal if she'ld like greenbacks and she asked if I would please pay on a credit card. times have changed!

Nothing in a box or rigid envelope, ships out of the country for under 10.00. Most of my shipments under 8 OZ average 13.00 and 22.00 for over 8 OZ but under a lb. I heard it's so we can subsidize some crazy cheap almost free shipping from sellers importing stuff direct from China. Ever wonder how you can buy items from Amazon or ebay with free shipping direct from China and only pay 2.00 or some other ridiculous price total including cost of the item and shipping when as a person who ships 6-10 items daily, I can not ship any item even within the states or even next town over in a box (even a 3.0 oz one ) for less than 2.00. I now understand the reason for postal hikes and the running in the red.
8E45E Posted November 30, 2017 Posted November 30, 2017 Canada Post is even worse! I bought an NOS locking gas cap from someone in Quebec who had it for sale on Kijiji for $15.00. Postage to Alberta was $15.30. On another occasion, a Studebaker club chapter member from Eastern Canada wanted to buy one of our ball caps. Again, postage was $19.95; more than the cost of the cap!! Craig
1937hd45 Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 Years ago there were people that refused to ship to Canada, there have been times when I understood why. Bob
danleblanc Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 Gee. I'm glad I live in close proximity to the US Border (I can see the US from my office). I have a receiving agent in Maine that charges $3.00 per package to receive them. Usually with the shipping + $3/package to receive, I'm still further ahead than if I ship to Canada. No hassles at the border. I keep my receipts and declare what I have coming back and I'm on my way. When I sell stuff, and it goes to the US, I usually bring it across the border and ship from Maine also. 2
