A friend put me onto these Kelsey Hayes wire wheels advertised on ebay ( he's been trying to convince me to put wire wheels on my 1955 56C convertible )

The advert is a bit sketchy but after sending a number of messages the seller advised the buy it now price of $900 was for 4 wheels, as stated in the description. He also agreed to ship them to Western Australia for US $64 per wheel and he rounded this up to US $250.

I felt reasonably comfortable with the description and price so hit the buy it now button. I had to request an invoice from the seller showing the freight component which duly arrived and I paid via Paypal. Received a message from the seller saying he had received the funds and he would send me a tracking number as soon as the wheels were shipped.

I have now received a notification from Paypal that my payment has been refunded and another from ebay stating my order has been cancelled by the seller?

I'm not out of pocket but the wheels are still advertised - does this mean the seller has received a better offer? ( he set the buy it now price ) I see he has had a number of inquiries and some offers. I'm confused!!

It probably means the seller screwed up and underpriced shipping and took the unethical and easy way out by simply refunding your money and having eBay cancel the order. I’ve lost my butt on shipping some eBay orders in the past but would never reneg on a deal such as what likely happened here.

And I say this because from past experience in shipping heavy stuff to AU I doubt a wheel could be shipped for $64. But $64 sounds a bit high for domestic shipping also.

Here's my two sides to that coin. I restored my 57's steering wheel. lots of hours. Came out flawless. Only problem was it was a spare 55 wheel I mistook for the 57's. OK. I'll put it on EBay and at least make some money. I started it at $10. It only got one bid, $10. A deal is a deal and some dude got the deal of a lifetime.

The flip side. I won a bid for a 56 Chrysler tail lamp lens for WAY under what it's worth. I waited and waited. No lens. Turns out the guy say's oh I dropped it and it broke. I'll tell Paypal. In other words **** you very much....................................Bob

The seller took his time to come back on shipping costs and had obviously checked it out. I thought it was reasonable as the postage cost for a set of 4 Jaguar wire wheels quoted on ebay from California to Perth was US $220.70 via USPS priority mail international.

Your '55 will look better keeping the shoes it has. And they are WAY easier to clean.

You're right Ben, just seems these wheels are a real bargain at the asking price of $900.

I think we've all picked up great bargains on ebay over the years and to be perfectly honest that's what I believe these are ( if the sellers description is to be believed ). There is a similar set, not as complete ( no spinners ) and needing refurbishment advertised for US $1900 at the moment.

At the end of the day the seller set his Buy it Now price as well as his postage cost confirmed by his invoice.

Anyway, I'm going with what Ben said - divine intervention!

Maybe he just changed his mind on the shipping deal and thought it was all too hard ?     Many times sellers on USA Ebay won't sell / ship to international buyers, even with great feedback ratings.  I don't know why.

I have had to forego a few good deals because the seller would not ship even when I was going to be paying.

Anyhow Stuart, there are a couple of reliable companies here that will bring them over for about the same money.  Trouble is you will still have bear the cost of freight to a yard in

Los Angeles CA
